From the course: Microsoft Entra ID for Administrators

What has changed

- [Instructor] Throughout this course, we will talk about the new name for Azure Active Directory, which is Microsoft Entra ID. Now, I've pulled up this page because I want to point out some of the renaming for those of you who are coming from an environment where you're somewhat familiar with Azure Active Directory. As well, some terminology in the user interface has not been updated for Microsoft Entra ID just yet. And a lot of the documentation that you may encounter online while you are learning about Entra ID is likely to still reference Azure Active Directory. Azure AD, Azure Active Directory has been around for many years. At the point of recording this course, I have at least 20 years experience with active directory and about half of that is on Azure AD. Active directory is the directory service that was introduced on Windows Server as a directory mechanism to be able to manage users and group and provide access to resources. When Azure was provided as a cloud service from Microsoft, soon after, Azure AD became the mechanism to provide access and to manage identities within a Microsoft cloud environment. So in 2022 and 2023, Microsoft started the renaming process from Microsoft Azure AD, or Microsoft Azure Active Directory to Microsoft Entra, which is a suite of products. Within the Microsoft Entra suite of product, we have Microsoft Entra ID, and that terminology is the direct link to Azure AD. So AD to ID. And on this page here, we see some of that terminology demystified. So if I go down the list here, I will see, first of all on the license front, the Azure AD free license, which is the default license that you get when you sign up for a Microsoft 365 subscription or an Azure Cloud, you get the Azure AD free license, Today, it's the Microsoft Entra ID free license. The premium licenses, the names have been retained, P1, P2, except, they've dropped the term premium. There are other Entra licenses as well, for governance, for example, as an additional add-on to the P1 or P2 license. As well, we have terminologies like Azure AD external identities, is now a Microsoft Entra external identity. So most of the time, you can just drop the Azure AD, replace it with Microsoft Entra, and then add an ID somewhere in there. There are some things that have changed and there are some things that have not changed. So the principle name change, Entra ID, Azure AD, that's the principle and as simple as it gets. However, here are some examples of exceptions. So first of all, active directory itself, the on-premises solution is not renamed. That still is Active directory, and there is no plan to rebrand that to Microsoft Entra. So on-premises is still active directory, active directory domain services, ADDS, of course, still the primary service we use on premises. There are some services that are either not updated yet or are going to be deprecated and replaced with new services. So for example, Azure AD Graph is becoming Microsoft Graph. So there's no need to rename Azure AD Graph to Microsoft Entra ID Graph. The same thing is true for Azure Active Directory PowerShell, Azure AD PowerShell, all of that is being replaced by Microsoft Graph PowerShell. That becomes the primary terminology. Accounts, so an account is still an account, whether it was an account that was stored in Azure AD or an account that is stored of Microsoft Entra ID, it's still a user account. So again, terminology is deprecated Azure AD Sync, or DirSync, those are deprecated. However, you will have the new technology, Microsoft Entra Connect that we will talk about later on in this course. So when did this all happen? So the name change occurs and begins to occur on August 15th, 2023. However, these plans have been announced for a while without all of the detail. The reality is that, not everything is really renamed. Some of the things that I will be demonstrating in this course are still using the old names, or even though they're using the new name, the interfaces have not been updated. So I know it can get a little bit confusing sometimes, but we need to allow a few more months for Microsoft to fully update all of the portals and the UIs to Entra. So again, Microsoft Entra is a suite of products, a family of product. There are other products within Entra as well such as Verified ID, Entra Permission management, the Entra External IDs and Governance, all of these are other products that fall within the suite of Entra family of products. All of these are managed using the Microsoft Entra Admin Center. So the Microsoft Entra Admin Center is the new version of the Azure AD Admin Center, and that is the primary tool that you will be using to manage your Microsoft Entra Tenant. We'll be talking about the Tenant, we'll be talking about the management tools, and we'll be talking about all of those names that I just mentioned in later on videos in this course.
