- [Instructor] Domain Name Service or DNS is an application layer protocol at the transport layer. It uses UDP instead of TCP because it doesn't require a reliable connection. As its name suggests DNS acts like a phone directory. IP addresses are difficult to remember because they are numbers like 10.35.4.150. Can you imagine people typing a number into the URL field of a web browser? I don't even remember my kid's phone numbers. This is why we need a DNS server in the cloud somewhere converting a meaningful domain name like world wide web.linkedin.com into an IP address because network equipment only understands IP addresses unlike human beings who prefer a name like LinkedIn. Every host is set up to use a specific DNS server. Let's take a look at how my machine is set up. Type Network in the search field.
