- The IRS lists 27 tax exempt organizations which means there are 27 categories in the nonprofit world. And if you're interested in supporting animal rights nonprofits, you could choose from over 40,000 of them. There are tons of causes a prospect could be interested in, but they're working with a specific set of dollars. As the fundraiser, you can highlight what makes your cause unique. As a prospect is going through the decision making process they go through five stages known as A-S-A-D-A. The third stage is assess. This is when the donor uses their specific criteria as they decide where their contribution will go. As the fundraiser you'll need to answer what your nonprofit is doing. At this stage, you may have the most influence because you are getting to know the prospect and asking the right questions to help you tailor a presentation that focuses on the prospect's needs.
