- What are you willing to pay for a cup of Joe? If you're from a small town where you get a cup of coffee from the local diner, your answer is probably a buck or two. But if you're a fan of Starbucks lattes, you're probably willing to pay three times as much. These two types of coffee drinkers have different perceptions and different realities. And it's all thanks to our brains. Humans form impressions based on what our brains have synthesized from our experiences of the world around us. That's why we perceive situations according to our personal needs, values, expectations and experiences. In other words, perception is reality.
