From the course: Oracle DB Cloud Database Migration and Integration Workshop

Zero Downtime Migration overview

Welcome friends to the Oracle University module on Zero Downtime Migration. I'm your host, Bennett. Let's get started. Oracle Zero Downtime Migration, ZDM, is a new product that was first released in November 2019. It's latest version 21c was released in March 2021. The idea of ZDM is to leverage existing Oracle technologies and provide customers with a simple, strong, and secure way of migrating their Oracle Databases to the Oracle Cloud. Oracle ZDM is fully maximum availability architecture compliant. In fact, the MAA team tested the product time and time again before release and will continue to be involved thoroughly in ZDMs development and testing. Now, when the idea of ZDM was born, we thought on how to make our customer's journey to the cloud as easy as possible. And that, of course, price needed to be taken into consideration. Since moving into the cloud presents difficult challenges, we wanted this transition to be as smooth as possible and hence ZDM is a free product and fully supported by Oracle during the duration of the customer's migration to the cloud, as long as the source database is supported and under a support contract. Now, when Zero Downtime Migration was initially developed, we wanted it to be simple, comprehensive, and able to scale to fleets of any size. ZDM approaches migration with a simple single-button focus. This is done by simply installing the ZDM, building a response file with appropriate information regarding connectivity, source, target, backup, and other information, and then issuing a single command to start the database migration process. ZDM presents a comprehensive approach since it inherits a lot of its framework from another Oracle product, Fleet Patching and Provisioning. ZDM performs extensive checks prior to the migration, after the migration process as well. Migration with ZDM can be paused and resumed at most of the migration stages. Also, customers can test the migration before starting. Since ZDM offers dry-run options which evaluate the migration process without performing an actual migration. This allows customers to know what could happen and then adjust and correct any issues beforehand. ZDM offers fleet-scale migration since it can run multiple migrations in parallel migrating multiple databases, either single instance or database as part of a RAC cluster. ZDM offers a centralized location to control all of the migration process, emulating a command deck and offering an audit trail with comprehensive logs. Finally, customers can schedule migrations. For instance, specifying that a specific database needs to be migrated on the weekend at 4 a.m. when the workload is minor and hence less impact will be generated.
