Introduction to real estate asset types

- Real estate is a broad term that includes many different types and classes of property. Now let's start with types first. At a broad starting point, we can divide real estate assets into residential and commercial real estate. Generally private investors, individual investors tend to focus more on investing in residential than commercial, because commercial tends to be much more expensive and usually more complicated to deal with. Now residential involves anything that is used for residential dwellings of four or fewer units. So we're talking houses, townhouses, vacation homes and small apartments. Once you get past four, it's considered multi-family commercial. On the residential side, here are the main investment asset types. We have single family residences. Now these are the most common, and the standard property type, and is designed to support one dwelling.
