- Product management has one of the longest ramp-up periods of any role. It takes longer to get in the groove of things in order to really have a big effect on the product or business. Given the complexity of the role, that's not really a big surprise. But what does come as a surprise is that it's weirdly difficult to be certain about your own performance at the job. I mean, how do you know you're doing well? Just because your manager says so? It's certainly not as cut-and-dry as some other roles in the tech world. In fact, there's a saying that goes, if you don't walk out of the office some days wondering if you're horrible at your job, you probably are. Now I've never found the magic, I-know-I'm-good-at-my-job-because-X metric, and it's likely you won't either. I mean, in my case, it may be because I really am a horrible product manager.
