Getting it straight: Agile, lean, and other buzzwords

- Unless you've been under a rock for the last six years or so, you've probably heard of some terms like lean, agile, and waterfall in reference to software development. In fact, if you're anything like me, I'm willing to bet that you've seen these terms so much that it hurts your head. At their core, these terms are simple. The problem is, in the modern frenzy of blogging and self-proclaimed thought leaders, I always found it difficult to find a good, solid definition that everyone agreed on. Is lean the same as agile? Is waterfall evil? So to save you the trouble, I'm going to de-mystify each of these for you in some quick points. Let's start with lean and waterfall. Building a product in a lean way just means what it sounds like. Trim the fat. Don't spend resources before you've proven it's prudent to. Don't build an entire app before you've validated the need for it. Build smaller versions of features, get feedback on them, and then build the rest with that in mind. In essence…
