- Remember, value is defined by what the customer is willing to pay for. Lean organizations work to understand their value stream, which is the main flow of value needed to produce the outcome that customers want. You must eliminate or at least minimize setup times and all other activities that don't add any value. The value stream map becomes the one repository for information about the process. From this map, all planning can be done. Changes can be depicted as progress is being made in reducing waste. Value stream mapping is a lean technique used to analyze and design the flow of materials and information required to bring a product or service to a consumer. At Toyota where the technique originated, it is known as material and information flow mapping. It can be applied to nearly any value chain, whether it's manufacturing or transactional.
