- Your expertise and ability are vital components of your success, but so is your work ethic, and guess what? Your social abilities might actually be your most valuable skill set. When you're new, it's all about getting to know people and becoming part of the team. My assumption here is that you have good communication skills. Lots of research links stronger communication skills and better work performance. This course isn't about communication skills per se, but how to use them to shape a social context that moves you forward at work. I think the social context conversation can be summarized by saying that success is defined by what you know, who you know, and how you add value. Let's start with what you know. Strong expertise is, of course, a requirement for you to advance. However, a strange thing happens over time.
