- Leo Tolstoy said, "Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself." Fact is, none of us are perfect and it takes a lot of courage to truly self-reflect and be honest with yourself about how others perceive you. Self-serving bias is working against all of us, which means we attribute positives to our own doing but negatives to outside forces. Did you leave the house late, for example? Or was it the traffic? Most will arrive late to their destination and say, "Man, that traffic was brutal today." It's hard to admit our faults and say, "Man, I left the house late." A good place to start building self-awareness is in author Christine Porath's book, "Mastering Civility: A Manifesto for the Workplace."
