- Don't make emotional decisions. Has anyone ever cautioned you about this before? Admittedly, sometimes it can be difficult not to let your emotions take over when you have to make a decision. However, this can be a problem in the recruiting and interview process. The affect bias is demonstrated when a hiring manager or recruiter allows their emotions to drive their decision about whether or not to hire a candidate. Now, there can be both negative and positive aspects of the affect bias. Imagine you're interviewing a candidate who has the same name as someone you may not personally like, maybe a former boyfriend or a former girlfriend, or the candidate physically remind you of that person. Your emotions may take over during the decision-making process and cause you to automatically disqualify the candidate even if their skills and experience perfectly qualify him or her for the job.
