#FREIGHT #LOGISTICS - #RENEWABLE #DIESEL Despite all the big talk and virtue signalling by stakeholders, some interesting facts emerge to debunk the forceful “embrace EV” culture. The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) recently conducted a study that yielded significant findings. It revealed that the transition to battery-powered trucks is not only more cost-effective but also more operationally efficient than using renewable diesel (RD) fuel. While the initial costs of electric vehicle purchases and electric infrastructure may seem daunting, it’s important to consider the long-term perspective. Over 15 years, these investments are projected to cost the long-haul sector more than $1 trillion. In comparison, using renewable fuel to power ICE trucks will cost $203 billion to achieve similar decarbonization benefits. The off-highway sector is just beginning its journey toward decarbonization, with electric powertrains a major focus for smaller machines, while larger off-highway equipment is likely to leverage renewable or biofuels. Big news in renewable aviation fuel! In January 2024, the first commercial facility for converting ethanol into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) opened in Soperton, Georgia, supported by DOE's Bioenergy Technology Office (BETO). Led by Dr. Mark Shmorhun, the Freedom Pines Fuel Facility will produce nine million gallons of SAF and one million gallons of renewable diesel in its first year, providing a boost to the local economy. This milestone supports the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Grand Challenge, aiming to produce three billion gallons of SAFs by 2030 and meet 100% of U.S. aviation fuel demand with SAFs by 2050. #RenewableAviationFuel #Sustainability #Bioenergy

As we move towards cleaner energy sources, it's crucial to keep in mind that sustainability is paramount. It's not enough to simply replace one fossil fuel with another. Reducing transport emissions is challenging, particularly for the trucking sector. It is also increasingly accepted that a fair assessment of emissions performance must investigate the whole life cycle of both the vehicle and its energy or fuel process. TER has led and published a comprehensive study yesterday (open access) into life-cycle emissions of Australian trucks, in collaboration with colleagues from Germany and Austria. We find that life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions performance strongly depends on the vehicle class, power-train (diesel, battery electric, hydrogen fuel cell) and year of assessment. In a future decarbonised situation (90% renewables), battery electric trucks are estimated to provide deep reductions (75–85%) in life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions. Fuel-cell electric (hydrogen) trucks also provide substantial reductions (about 50–70%), but not as deep as those for battery electric trucks. Importantly, hydrogen trucks exhibit a relatively large spread in emissions performance, which reflects the general uncertainty and lack of information for this technology. They therefore carry an elevated risk of not achieving anticipated emission reductions. Using currently available data and evidence, battery electric trucks show the smallest (absolute) uncertainty, which suggests that these trucks are expected to deliver the deepest and most robust emission reductions. https://lnkd.in/g6YXpEMM
