Colne Valley Viaduct update: Successful parapet installation over local road Last night, our Colne Valley Viaduct Finishes team successfully completed parapet installation and stitch construction over a local road in Harefield. The road had been closed overnight to complete the works and we’re pleased to confirm the team completed the works ahead of schedule and was able to re-open the road for public use four days earlier than originally planned. Smiths have recently joined the Tarmac National skills and safety park where our employee Charlotte Nash has embarked on her L2 Material Processing Plant Operator Apprenticeship. We are proud to partner with Tarmac being one of the first external companies to join since they became externally accredited back in April. We are the first borough in London to trial a unique, new asphalt mix that can significantly reduce the carbon footprint in road resurfacing works. The trailblazing project led by Redbridge Council, in partnership with Kenson Highways, utilised the revolutionary asphalt for road resurfacing works at Lodge Hill, in Ilford. The asphalt mix, supplied by Tarmac, significantly lowered the carbon footprint from the road resurfacing process by incorporating a carbon negative product into the mix, called ACLA®. Results showed that using ACLA®, Tarmac’s asphalt had reduced the project’s carbon footprint by 68%, which is equivalent to an average UK car driving 17,400 miles, or a round trip to Los Angeles for two people. ACLA® was designed and manufactured by Earthshot Prize finalist climate tech company Low Carbon Materials (LCM). It works by capturing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to permanently remove it and lock it into the resurfaced road. Typically, there are three layers of asphalt applied when resurfacing roads. For the trial ACLA® was used in the middle layer, ensuring the entire middle layer of the road was net zero, as well as significantly lowering the project's carbon footprint overall. Steve Moore, our Corporate Director of Communities said, “Redbridge Council is proud to be the first London borough to pioneer this new trial in partnership with Kensons, Low Carbon Materials, and Tarmac. This innovative initiative not only aims to enhance infrastructure but also demonstrates our commitment to creating a cleaner and greener borough.” David Shelley, Director for Kenson Highways, said, “Our ongoing collaboration with Redbridge aims to identify methods to reduce carbon emissions, and this initiative represents one of several efforts to decrease emissions throughout the borough. Kenson Highways is proud to have contributed to this trial and remains committed to supporting the reduction of carbon footprints in both current and future projects.” Tim Smith, Senior Technical Manager (South East) at Tarmac added, “There has never been a more important time to explore innovative, carbon-saving solutions and materials. By collaborating with supply chain and industry partners on this project we have demonstrated what's possible in delivering greener roads. It’s crucial that the learnings from this project help to inform further decarbonisation of the road network.” Natasha Boulding, CEO of LCM, said, “This project offers a blueprint for best-practice and a clear roadmap for dramatically reducing the environmental impact of road construction and maintenance.” The trial is a great example of collaboration and working towards a sustainable future.

This time last week Richard Kirwin and I were joined by 45 of our colleagues from Aggregates, Asphalt, Pave, RMX, Highway Services, Technical and Excom at Headingley Stadium for a collaborative solutions focused event for the Tarmac North and Scotland region. We kicked things off with an official opening from our Managing Director, Shaun Davidson, and Head of Finance, Nick Mason, sharing details of the wider CRH group and how we at Tarmac play a part. A number of our management team then shared details of what we’ve achieved so far with CEVO and sustainable asphalt on projects in the Northern region. Then followed a number of breakout sessions where we set KPIs and looked at the sustainable solutions that we’ll be focusing on going forward. We welcomed Tony Carney, HA Civils MD, to the day to give us a truly insightful account of the customer perspective. The Voice of the Customer is important to us as we work to move forward with innovation and work towards achieving Net Zero. Our customers are always forefront of our minds and listening to Tony helped us all see how working collaboratively will allow us to foster growth for all. Thank you to each and every person who helped with the event to make it a success. The day formed part of our ongoing commitment to continuously review our approach to how we can best serve our customers and, as a result, we’re proud to be offering a number of CPDs focused on innovation and solutions. A brilliant morning supporting one of our local Manchester communities supplying concrete for both a new footpath and a base for an extension on the stand at Wythenshawe FC. A concentrated effort from the distribution team to ensure all 3 deliveries utilising a combination of our Tarmac Northwest fleet and ACE Minimix - North West to make sure the customer got what they needed perfectly timed whilst optimizing our fleet capabilities. Just a round of applause to the guys from Planet Surfacing who had donated there morning to get the job done, this included wheel barrowing the length of the pitch in some gloriously warm weather. Tarmac proud moment.

Fantastic couple of days welcoming our newest cohort onto the L2 Material Processing Plant Operator Apprenticeship. As well as amazing bunch of learners there are a couple of firsts… Two learners for us as a Main Provider taking our OFSTED outstanding apprenticeship provision to Smiths Bletchington and Chepstow Plant International Ltd.
