Do not apply for Beyond Education (BE) internships! Especially if you are going to complain about: →£4800 not being enough pay for 10 weeks →3 stage interview process being long-winded →Any other childish complaint you can think off Respectfully, the internship is not for you, and that is absolutely fine. These are some of the complaints we've fielded recently. Most of the younger generation value instant gratification over short-term sacrifice. When the internet is filled with endless highlights of quick wins, I don't blame them I guess. But just know that I wouldn't come here convincing people to do things that I haven't done or would do. I took a pay cut of over £20k just to do a private equity internship. Went through a three-stage *in-person* interview process whilst I was working full-time. I knew this would be a short-term sacrifice for a long-term gain. 4 months after the internship, I was getting paid £65k in Asset Management. Still not convinced about short-term sacrifices? I recently discovered that one of the candidates who went through our internship programme last year just received an internship offer from BlackRock! And they are still fielding multiple interviews and career prospects. Simply because they did a three-stage interview for an internship that doesn't pay competitively(apparently). If you want to break your back in the summer for retail shifts that won't get you any closer to getting a corporate job after graduating, that's fine. I am excited to say that I was selected, participated in and successfully completed Bright Network’s virtual 4 day summer internship 2023 on ‘Asset Management and Investment Banking’ with certification. This experience involved joining video sessions led by leading companies, learning both technical and soft skills, working on hand-on tasks, and networking with peers. The highlight of this internship for me was the opportunity to complete hands on tasks which gave me a real insight on the type of experience I would gain at an in-person internship. I was given the opportunity to work on an assessment centre task (in a group) and also complete a work sample (individually) as if the task was set by an employer. For both of these, my conclusions had to be presented as though I was advising a board of directors. The assessment centre task involved finding and working in groups to In the work sample, I had to consider a hypothetical acquisition of Hugo Boss by Ralph Lauren by doing a financial valuation of Hugo Boss and a qualitative evaluation of the factors that should be considered. I “absorbed” the knowledge taught to me in previous sessions to do the financial calculations and I used background in business for the written requirements. Jan Patrick Hensel, a representative from UBS, guided me to really understand the work sample once I had attempted it. The internship also involved various ‘skill sessions’ that helped to improve my soft skills. These include a ‘growth mindset’, which Tom Moody from Procter & Gamble excellently explained was like being a ‘sponge’ as apposed to a rock and teamwork in a professional environment by Mercedes Thompson and Ifeoluwa Onigbinde from Bloomberg. These sessions certainly aided my understanding and I believe also allowed me to develop. The value of eco friendliness was also emphasised to me as I learnt how UBS, Schroders, Berenberg, Bloomberg, Houlihan Lokey, and Lloyds Banking Group integrate ESG within their businesses and how they advise their clients to consider it as their core mission! I also got to hear from workers at many leading companies in the sector to find out what they are seeking for in applicants in the daily careers talk hour. This was not only a great opportunity to network with peers via messaging and video call, but also to hear from sector specialists and all in all to introduce myself to the industry. Piece of advice for those interning right now! When I landed my internship opportunity during the school year, I was totally unaware of the Canadian work culture. And above all, my internship fell just at the midst of the global pandemic. One piece of advice if I have to give to my fellow aspiring HR professionals or other professionals from other domains who are right now doing their internships: 'Look out for opportunities' don't just say what next, rather look for opportunities/projects where you can contribute. 'Ask for feedback!' Make sure you take full advantage of this amazing opportunity. Ask for feedback on how you can improve and with what tools. 'Connect with more and more people in the company, to build lasting relationships'. 'Get to know the company's culture, values and principles' so they see the value you represent and how they align with it. 

As part of my continued efforts to foster growth and development, I am proud to be collaborating with the Talent Acquisition Team at May Institute to prepare for our Intern Training Weeks. This summer, we are hosting 40 interns in various roles within the organization. With my experience in training and managing interns, I know that Intern Training Week is more than just onboarding. It's a great opportunity for these interns to start building their professional network and gain valuable career insights that will benefit them throughout their internship and beyond. Here are some key points for all interns to keep in mind: - Network, Network, Network! Attend company events, use social media, and seek mentorship. Connect with professionals in your field, join relevant groups, and participate in meaningful discussions. - Engage in conversations and build connections with peers and colleagues. These relationships can lead to mentorships and collaborations that can last a lifetime. - Be proactive in offering your help and expertise. Don't hesitate to demonstrate your value to colleagues and management.  - After your internship ends, stay connected with your colleagues and mentors. These connections can open doors to future opportunities and collaborations. Good luck to our future interns, we are excited to have you!

As a student, I strongly opposed 𝘂𝗻𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀. My view was simple: work deserves pay. What I didn't realize then was the investment companies make in interns: • Time from experienced professionals • Resources for training • Opportunities to learn and grow Now I see internships differently. They're not just about immediate pay but about companies investing in your professional development. This shift in perspective made me wonder: How can we better communicate the value of internships to students? How can companies make their investment in interns more visible?
