Magician Joshua Jay, author of “How Magicians Think... and Why Magic Matters,” provides an excellent explanation of a major tenet of magic: misdirection. We’ve all heard the term, but why is it important here? Understanding misdirection is crucial to understanding how magicians think. Most magic can't work without it at some level, regardless of method; it's a significant part of the ideation process. It requires exploring every move, every angle, and every possible perception of what’s being presented to be successful. It also means constant experimentation to optimize the effect. As marketers, we can draw inspiration from this by challenging ourselves to be as exhaustive as magicians in our creative pursuits. The results could be, well, magical! Listen carefully to the nuances of Joshua’s explanation because there’s a lot more at work here than simply “making the audience look where you want them to look!” What surprises you? During the planning of the Haunted Rose Presents Threshold of Darkness, I implemented a story concept that I haven't seen utilized in other haunted attractions. We had a very elaborate Frankenstein/ Dr. Jekyll Lab Scene that would feature a confrontation between. Dr Frankenstein's monster and a transformed Dr. Henry Jekyll into Mr. Hyde. This scene would play out every thirty seconds in front of our guests. Because we knew schedules wouldn't allow for all characters to be present in this scene every single night of the run, we came up with contingency scenarios, that would enable the talent to play through the scene in any combination to a successful narrative. Scenario 1: Dr. Jekyll drinks the transformation formula and steps behind the curtain as alternative build talent emerges as Mr. Hyde, frankensteins monster breaks free from his restraints and they proceed to fight as the guests exit the scene. 3 Talent Max Scenario https://lnkd.in/gvCcQB_9 Scenario 2: Dr. Jekyll plays as Dr. Frankenstein instead with Talent dressed as Igor to resurrect the monster. Guests view his struggle while exiting the scene. 1 Talent Max Scenario https://lnkd.in/gSFciuH2 In creating these engaging variations on the same scene we ensured that the guests got an impactful experience no matter how many talent could be available for this scene and stayed true to a strong narrative.
