What is a founder? You might be surprised at how words like entrepreneur, founder, or innovator are not universally adopted by folks launching startups. We've met individuals who have started their own businesses, worked tirelessly and hustled to build a customer base and a stable business, but may balk at calling themselves a founder. But the definition is fairly straightforward - it is someone who establishes a new business. What some founders may be avoiding is taking on secondary description as being a creative force, risktaker. Or as Forbes puts it - "It carries connotations of creativity and innovation, determination, native intelligence, and a sense of fearlessness." Being a founder can be all of those things or some of those roles or identities may be shared with a co-founder or other early member of their startup team. Either way, if you started your business, you are a founder. Entrepreneurship is a journey of committing endless mistakes, learning from them and improving as you move forward. While some mistakes may be new to your business, founders can also learn from others' mistakes, which will not only save them effort but time and resources in the long run. I go to several competitions as a jury and listen to 100s of founders pitching, and this time at JITO Shark Angels, I realised that there are some common mistakes all founders tend to make when pitching. As an active angel investor, here are three things that founders must take care of while pitching: 𝗕𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 There's a difference between being passionate about your idea and being rigid about it. Investors value founders who are open to input and willing to adapt their ideas. Flexibility shows that you are committed to solving a problem and take feedback as a tool for refinement and growth, not a criticism to be defensive about. 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 It's tempting to try to do everything at once, especially when you're passionate about multiple aspects of your business. However, in the early stages, a focused approach not only makes your goals clearer but also demonstrates to investors that you have a strategic plan and the discipline to execute it. 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗮 𝗟𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 The size of the market is an important consideration for investors. With a market too small, the potential for growth and return on investment will be limited. A large market signifies opportunity and scalability, which are key elements that attract investment. I hope these pointers from the PoV of an investor will help you present a compelling and convincing pitch to angel investors next time. Good luck, and keep innovating! Many times I find myself going to networking events between founders and investors and what I hear is: “This event is terrible, it’s pure founders” Instead of… “This event is a great opportunity to collaborate” Or… “There are too many startups here, not enough backers” Instead of…. “A wealth of startups means a wealth of knowledge” Or… “Where will I get value if it’s mainly founders” Instead of… “Value is everywhere if you know where to look” It’s time to change your perspective: We all can be mentored and mentor one another. Learn from founders who may be two steps behind you or two steps ahead. Pre-seed can learn from Seed Seed founders can learn from Series A Share resources. Share knowledge. Share connections.
