1ne Talent Agency are very happy to welcome Jack Rex Burnell as our newest addition to it's speaking roster! Jack Burnell, a retired Olympian swimmer, carved his name in the archives of open water swimming history with a silver medal at the 2016 European Open Water Swimming Championships in the 10 km race. However, his journey took an unexpected turn at the 2016 Rio Olympics when he faced disqualification in the same event. In 2017, Jack seemed to make a comeback by clinching gold at the FINA World Cup in Abu Dhabi. However, beneath the surface, he continued to grapple with the emotional aftermath of the 2016 Olympics. The looming World Championships in Budapest that same year brought to light Jack's inner turmoil, as he candidly shared his battles with depression, triggered by the disqualification. Following these challenges, Jack decided to retire from competitive swimming. However, his commitment to high performance persisted. Jack transitioned into a new role as a performance mindset coach, bringing his wealth of experiences to benefit individuals and organizations. Notably, he found a place in the world of football, working with prestigious teams like Brentford Football Club and Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. Jack's coaching approach is not rooted in academic psychology but rather drawn from the crucible of real-life experiences on one of the world's biggest sporting stages—the Olympic Games. He emphasizes the key characteristics required for peak performance, whether in the Olympic arena or the corporate world. This week, both Swimming Australia and USA Swimming will begin holding their respective Olympic Trials for the upcoming Olympic Games. Last summer at the World Championships, the Australians pulled off a stunner by earning more gold medals than the Americans (13 to 7). However, the Australians have not topped a medal table at the Olympic Games since 1956 in Melbourne. The Americans have a long track record of performing well in Olympic years. The US Olympic roster will likely feature athletes who are current NCAA athletes or just wrapped up their eligibility this March. For the US veterans that end up making the team, nearly all of them still train on college campuses. With college athletics going through a total shift, my opinion is that schools are the most marketable when they are successful in multiple areas. Athletic Departments should celebrate their Olympic Gold Medalists as much as they celebrate football and basketball accomplishments. WBB certainly has proven that investing in the talent can pay off. The NCAA swimming and diving system develops many Olympic medal contenders, for both the United States and the rest of the world. Every champion was once a challenger I love watching the Olympics. The past few nights I have been watching some of the US National Swimming and Diving Championships. For swimming, only the top two swimmers from each country can qualify. The United States, as a historic power, often has more than two swimmers who could place highly at the Olympics, or even medal, but only two can go. The level of competition is intense. Hundreds of tenths of a second can make the difference between going to the Olympics or finishing third in the nation (still a VERY laudable achievement) and staying home. Other sports, like track & field and women’s gymnastics in the United States have the same level of top international athletes competing to represent their country. During the swimming championships, there have been several stories of people who competed in past national championships and didn’t make the cut. Some barely missed. Some missed by a lot. But they pushed, they competed, and they won this year. Others who were Olympians in past years, and even gold medal winners, missed out this time. Some even had personal best times but others passed them by and had even better results. It is a reminder that every champion will eventually fall (or retire) and someone who was once trying hard to get on top will finally reach the summit. Talent is a big part of it, but so is experience, training, hard work, and desire. Whatever challenges you face - whether professional or personal – and whatever goals you have left unfulfilled, consider whether you can still be the champion you want to be. If so, stay in the game. Work hard. You can still do it. Exciting update: Celebrating Anita Alvarez who is now an Olympic silver medalist alongside her Team USA in the artistic swimming competition. More incredible, the victory marks the first time the United States has medaled in the event since 2004. The idiom "get back on the horse", or in this case, get back in the pool, delivered an exceptional result, reminding us all to keep fighting for our dreams!🏆 At the World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, Anita Alvarez, the two-time Olympian finished her free solo routine, passed out, and sunk to the bottom of the pool. Looking across the pool, her coach, Andrea Fuentes, noticed she was under too long and without hestitation jumped in fully clothed pulling her up to safety. Anita was fully unconscious and had no way to kick to the surface and save herself. And if her coach hadn’t known her as well as she did, she certainly would have drowned. When I saw this story, I asked myself: When you are under too long, who are the people who will pull you to the surface when you lose your strength? Are you surrounding yourself with those who pay attention and put others first? Do you lead by example? And can someone count on you to provide that needed strength when they don’t have it? Jim Rohn’s famous quote “You Are The Average Of The 5 People You Spend The Most Time With”, is not just in your personal life, it is all encompassing. If you’re a leader, hire people who emulate the traits you respect and can do the same for others on the team. Choose an employer that stands for something important to you. We have choices, lead and live by example.

These competitive swimmers, who are racing to be qualified for the Paris Olympics, are a true testament of excellence! Competitive swimming is one of the sports that... To be excellent, you have to practice the same stroke 1000 times over! Such grit, determination, and playing the long game. I have a daughter who is a competitive swimmer, and trust me when I say: Times can be tough where she is heavily challenged, near the cusp of quitting, especially when all her hard work doesn't show immediate results. In our fast paced world, where everything comes at lightning speed, including our immediate need for gratification and expectations for success... These swimmers are great reminder for me to be focused, be consistent, have grit, determination, and play the long game. They both exemplify the qualities of resilience, preparation, and peak performance traits that are crucial in both sports and business. Lukas Märtens, the German swimming sensation, faced enormous pressure at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Competing in the highly anticipated 400-meter freestyle, he didn’t just meet expectations, he shattered them. Despite intense competition, Lukas led the race and held his ground, securing Germany’s first Olympic swimming gold since 2008. His success was a masterclass in mental toughness, preparation, and delivering when it matters most. On the other side, Ahmed Elgendy, the Egyptian modern pentathlon star, overcame an even steeper challenge. AUSTRALIA beat its record with 18 Gold Medals today at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Breakdown of quick insights on medal performances so far: ■ Gold Medal: Currently 40% of Australia's total Gold Medals came from swimming (or put differently: 32% from women's swimming gold). With a few days remaining, I predict 30% of total Gold will be swimming (which is excellent -- at Tokyo 2020 swimming was 53% gold); ■ Just Add Water: 70% of Australia's total 40 medals so far have come from "water-related events" - rowing, sailing, swimming, canoe slalom. ■ Powerful Women: Currently 62% of the Australia's total 39 medals are won by Women ■ Team Sports: Currently 20% of total 39 medals from team sports. With women basketball and beach volleyball (we're in semis in both), waterpolo and few cycling events left -- could hit 25% total medals from team sports.

The final day of swimming at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 on Sunday, 4 August saw the People's Republic of China with Xu Jiayu, Qin Haiyang, Sun Jiajun and Pan Zhanle win gold in the men's 4x100m medley relay with a time of 3:27.46. This is the 19th gold medal for the Chinese delegation at this year's Olympics. After the race, members of the Chinese swimming team were interviewed: Xu Jiayu: "Today, I felt particularly strong. I was confident that I could achieve a good result, and I did." Qin Haiyang: "Today, I think this was our most impressive performance!" Pan Zhanle: "Thanks to my great teammates who gave me confidence and a slight advantage. The championship is ours; if anyone is dissatisfied, it should be others, not us." Pan Zhanle: "On my 20th birthday, I fulfilled the promise I made a year ago. A new journey has begun." The official results show that Pan Zhanle swam the final leg in 45.92 seconds, which is 0.48 seconds faster than the 46.40-second world record he set in the 100m freestyle final. He won the final leg by over a second, with no other competitor swimming under 47 seconds. August 4th was also his birthday. After the race, Pan Zhanle posted on Weibo（similar to X）: "For my 20th birthday, I fulfilled the promise I made a year ago by celebrating with a team gold medal. After 9 days of intense Olympic competition, I'm finally done. With a tally of 2 golds and 1 silver, I’m quite satisfied! A new journey has begun, and my goals have been set quietly. Paris 2024 Olympic Swimming - Submerged #2 Men’s 400 Individual Medley: This is the closest Olympic swimming comes to a one horse race. Marchand (FRA) has a “complete set” in terms of his 200m quality across all four strokes. His transitions (changing strokes) and underwater work are the best. He will excel in the breast leg and the more time he is swimming freestyle (fastest stroke) while the others are still on breaststroke (slowest stroke), he effectively doubles his lead. After the easiest 4.08 I’ve ever seen in a heat, apart from Michael Phelps (USA) and Ryan Lochte (USA), one can throw back to the 1988 Seoul Olympics and you have a comparison in Tamás Darnyi (HUN). Carsen Foster (USA) although fastest in the world this year and comfortable with a 4.11 in heats, will likely be chasing for second. Women’s 100 Fly: Another chance for McKeon (AUS) to consolidate her place as Australia’s most medal winning Olympian but she’ll be doing it from the outside lanes - plenty have done it from there. However, Walsh (USA) with her Olympic Record in the semis, Huske (USA) and Kohler (GER) with impressive second 50’s, will make things difficult. A 29. coming home will most likely win this one. Men’s 100 Breast. The focus for this event is clearly on Adam Peaty’s (GBR) ability to secure his 3rd consecutive 100m Breaststroke Olympic title. With that status comes the age question. But old breastrokers make good ones - the average age of this final is 26.1 yrs, just over 2 years older than the average age of all top male swimmers in 2022. Fink (USA) will be a serious threat, as will Kamminga (NED), Qin (CHN) and Martinenghi (ITA) - the splits of each of these athletes indicates that any challenge to Peaty will come all in the final 20m. #olympicswimming  #Paris2024
