Alvaro Benito was a Real Madrid player who as soon as he joined the first team had a very serious injury that cut short his entire professional career.   This excerpt from the interview with him in OFFSIDER seems very interesting to me because he talks about harmonizing and having patience with the players who come to the team. Each one has his times, his degree of maturity and his mentality. Talent is present and it makes no sense to discard a person without giving him a margin of time to develop it.   I think the same should apply at the corporate level. what does player number ten and an outstanding employee have in common? The answer which I think is simple: they both have the skills, the attitude, and the passion to excel in their respective fields. Player number ten is the one who creates opportunities, assists teammates, and scores goals. An outstanding employee is one who delivers results, supports colleagues, and achieves objectives. They both share a vision, a commitment, and a drive to succeed. The number ten player is the heart and soul of any team. This player has the vision, the skill, the leadership, and the passion to make the game happen. They can switch from defence to offence, from pressure to creativity, from support to challenge, and from failure to success. They are not always the ones who score the most goals or get the most awards, but they are the ones who make the team shine and achieve their objectives. A good example of this is Modric, who won the Golden Ball over Messi and Cristiano because he demonstrated his value as a team player and a game-maker. This is why I think we need a book that explores what it means to be the number ten player in any system. Not just in soccer but also in work, in life, and society. To be the one who creates value and solves problems. To be the one who makes things easier and better for others. To be the one who thinks strategically and acts effectively. Nothing gets accomplished by just one person. I often get asked questions like, "Why do you care so much about your job" , or "Why would you put more effort or energy in than the people around you". The Los Angeles Clippers are one of many teams across sports who believed that the Accumulation of Talent can take precedence over Methodical Team Building. Keeping in mind everything that we know about Building Championship Teams, you would think Businesses worth Billions of Dollars would develop a Team and Organization Building Process that would be consistent with success in sports. The Clippers did the opposite. They ignored Risk. The Best Example of this is their decision to give Kawhi Leonard a 3 Year extension despite his age and injury history. The decision to extend Kawhi offers a window into the mind of Clippers Owner Steve Ballmer. Ballmer either believes that when healthy this is a championship team. Or, Ballmer believes that selling hope buys him time and engagement. It provides relevance and engagement in the short-term. In the long-term it buys him time to fix what is a poorly constructed team. Finally, there is one last mistake the Clippers made that goes under the radar. A few years ago the Clippers Front Office became Operators Rather Than Founders. That means, the Front Office stopped making decisions. Instead there approach to Team Building was governed by Steve Ballmer. This is a common theme among underperforming teams around the world. Oddly, this happens more than we realize. If we take a moment to look, signs of collaboration inspiration, and team work are all around us. This weekend, I had the opportunity to attend the Varsity Spirit All-star Summit event, and I have to say it was incredible. Not only did we see some phenomenal talent, we saw cheer teams watching and encouraging their competitors during practice, we saw amazing sportsmanship displayed by teams who were competing with each other. We saw signs of outstanding team work. One of the most impressive things I saw was when a team’s routine did not go as planned, and how the team did not blame each other, but supported each other in how to get better, focusing on things to improve. Whether you are a fan of the Cheer Leading sport or not, many of these lessons can be brought back to the workplace. We can learn from this event how to celebrate each other’s successes, how to support one another in times of difficulty or when projects or tasks come up short. We can learn how to support others who may be in competition with us for a job, a project, or funding. I know many reading this may have a vision in their mind when I mention a Cheer Leading competition, but what I saw was a ton of lessons we can learn, and bring back to our corporate environments to enhance culture and drive greater success.

This post from Leadership First resonates so much with my little team. Our team isn't just that small group of people who work at the same time in the same place. All of us are so different, in terms of cultural backgrounds, educational backgrounds, how we were raised, hobbies, interests, etc. We definitely are not equal on experience, talents, education, knowledge. However, we are passionate about what we do and how we do our work to ensure amazing outcomes. We are committed to work cohesively to achieve our goals. We are equal in our commitment. We respect each other, we care about one another, and to top it of, we trust each other. TRUST is something that binds us together, as a team. In our line of work, it would be quite difficult to work together if we don't trust each other. The harmonious presentation of festivals and events for event attendees is the result of trust. Is "trust" your number one thing that binds your team? Or is it something else in your case?

When we look at successful businesses, sports teams, churches, and even families, they all have one thing in common, great chemistry. There is an old saying in the NBA, that superstars win you championships. I think there is a lot of truth in that statement, but as I watched the NBA championships this year, I couldn’t help but notice how the teams who didn’t make the so-called superstars their primary focus, not only won, but dominated. I believe that teams and all individuals in a team generally do a better job when everyone feels a sense of belonging and is valued for the contribution they make to the team. This also includes always feeling safe and being able to talk about things that bother them or that don't work out so well. It is about being able to talk to others about personal strengths and weaknesses in a trusting way. 🤝💼 At first, I was very surprised and could not understand what I did so differently, that I deserved this award. When I realized it, I felt great joy and pride in Radiometer that my actions to try and establish a certain way of thinking and acting about DE&I in my teams didn’t go unnoticed. 🏆🎉 There is a great advantage in a team to have diversity of opinion based on many different experiences in education, biography as well as cultural backgrounds. Opening up in the teams and talking about concrete cases and situations of diverse thinking and acting can help others realize that we do need different individuals to be more successful. 🌍💬 My advice for others is to simply go beyond what is required as a team leader. Don't just hold a "Day of Understanding" but rather make it a routine.
