The plastic water bottle industry has thrived on consumerism and over the years has become an essential part of our lives. It comes with a cost and unfortunately that cost is paid by the environment - overflowing landfills, high amounts of fossil fuel for production and covering the ocean surface with plastic products. The G20 Summit in New Delhi has set a good example by choosing sustainable food and products. One such example is found on the tables of the leaders where drinking water is provided in glass bottles instead of plastic bottles. Such choices highlight the importance of sustainability and show how leaders can set an example for rest of the world. I had the opportunity of speaking at India Circular Economy Forum (#ICEF2024) organized by International Council for Circular Economy (#ICCE) during a panel discussion on Reinventing Innovation in Plastic Circularity. The point I made was the country cannot have separate policies for upstream production and downstream reuse/ recycle in plastic value chain. The production and end of life treatment is functionally interlinked and we are supposed to produce only to the extent we can manage/ reuse/ recycle. Anything beyond would always lead to landfills. So the paradox of only regulating end of life treatment of plastic would lead to nowhere.
