In the quest for equality and support, one stark reality often overlooked is the disproportionate underfunding of LGBTQ organizations. At The Trevor Project, we are acutely aware of this challenge, which a recent insightful article by my fabulous colleague, Tina M. Barber, MPA, in Philanthropy News Digest brilliantly brings to light. https://lnkd.in/gbsfHKaD This insightful piece sheds light on the challenges faced by organizations like ours and underscores the urgency for equitable funding. It's not just about maintaining operations – it's about expanding our reach to ensure that every LGBTQ+ young person who needs support can access it. I see every day how vital these services are and how much more we could achieve with increased support. As we continue our mission to provide crisis intervention and suicide prevention services, I invite our partners and the broader community to join us in this endeavor. Being an ally goes beyond labels. Being an LGBTQ+ ally means actively supporting and advocating for the community. Through advocacy and support, allies help turn 'them' into 'us,' encouraging individuals to be themselves and supporting them on their journey. A 2019 article in the Harvard Business Review made the case that LGBTQ+ inclusion is good for the economy. As more businesses make this connection, they are stepping forward to make an economic case for non-discrimination protections and against discriminatory laws. Fast forward to Andrea Frank, a Door County resident and recent Canary Fund grant recipient who helped to develop a project in helping businesses show their support for and welcoming the LGBTQ+ community. The Pride Flag Initiative (from Open Door Pride) is designed to offer free pride flags to local businesses or organizations to fly outside of their business to show customers they are a supportive, welcoming, and inclusive place. The goal of our initiative is to have all businesses flying the flag and support the LGBTQIA+ community. GSBA is excited to let you know that The Washington State Department of Commerce has asked us to reach out to the LGBTQ+ community on their behalf. Specifically, they want to hear about what types of facilities (housing and/or non-housing) are most needed in the coming 5-10 years. This information will be used to determine how funding is distributed by the Dept. Of Commerce to Community-Based Organizations who are planning capital projects. The survey has only 3 questions and should not take you more than 5 minutes to complete. The final question of the survey will ask you if you are willing to participate in a follow-up interview, and GSBA is offering stipends ($45-$105) to LGBTQ+ community members (including extra $ for child/adult care if needed) who are willing to elaborate further on their initial responses via a ~30-minute, virtual meeting with a GSBA team member.
