I shared this last week because the author perfectly summed up how data can drive your understanding of your customer base. 🙌 And it reminded me of 3 things every marketer needs to remember about data.. 1. Our assumptions don’t often match with reality. 😳 The insights in our Intelligence Reports often surprise the client because they’ve settled on their customer value as being much higher than the reality. Why? - because a founder or leader wants to believe their brand is as popular with their customer base as it is with them and their loved ones 😍 - because customers ‘misremember' in surveys or the wrong questions are asked. My favourite supermarket? Waitrose. The one where I actually spend my money according to the data? Sainsbury’s 🛒 - because operators tend to look to their own echo chamber for feedback and echo chambers tend to play back exactly what we want to hear 👂 As the lyric goes, 'Still a man hears what he wants to hear, and disregards the rest’. 2. Data often needs context🧠 - understanding the ‘why’ behind the behaviour will help you make better decisions. I’ve lost count of how many veggie burgers I’ve been asked to test as a life long veggie. One was even positioned as being able to recreate the ‘blood like drips’ associated with a really rare burger. Understanding that I haven't eaten meat for nearly 50 years because the texture makes me absolutely VOM will ensure your product dev & comms are giving me what I need to visit you more often. 😬 - looking at your customer’s behaviour over a year rather than a snapshot in time will help give context to certain behaviours. ‘All I want for Xmas is You' is deffo on my most played, but only for about 2 weeks in December! 🎄 - understanding your customers world outside your brand is vital. What role do you play? Are you the trade up or trade down? Are you the convenient bite to eat or the destination go to? For most brands we work with, less than 10% of the customer base are visiting more than one of your locations suggesting ease rather than genuine brand loyalty 🤔 3. Insight is nothing without action! ⚡️ - Segmentation: Break your database comms up into chunks based on the action you want someone to take, whether that’s bringing back those on the brink of lapse or driving one more visit from the majority of your base visiting far less frequently than you think. And don't deliver the same messaging to someone whose last visit was 6 months ago as the the person who popped in just last week. - Personalisation:  What insight do you have at your disposal that you can leverage to make sure those comms convert? Make sure you have a decent spread of demographic, geographic, behavioural & psychographic data to build the most impactful comms 🧠 - Automation: Data shouldn’t stop at the stuff being generated or captured by your tech, so make sure you include your own A/B testing & performance insights to optimise your automated journeys 👌 #data #marketing
