Kentucky takes a step toward decriminalizing human error. Interesting that they isolated it to healthcare providers. What about teachers, police officers, or parents? One small step, I guess. Great article by Anastasia Brunner explaining how Kentucky tweaked their justice system.

We heard lots of rhetoric in the past week about the unacceptability of violence in our culture - because a rich, powerful, white man was shot at. I found the level of that rhetoric either (a) disingenuous or (b) completely disconnected from reality. The continued use of violence by the state, and those who act on its behalf, as an acceptable and appropriate form of social management - IS THE PROBLEM, IS THE REASON WHY INDIVIDUAL AMERICANS BELIEVE THAT THE USE OF VIOLENCE TO SOLVE PROBLEMS IS MORALLY, ETHICALLY, AND CULTURALLY ENDORSED - BECAUSE IT IS CULTURALLY ENDORSED (GIVING THE ILLUSION THAT IT MUST THEREFORE ALSO BE BOTH ETHICALLY AND MORALLY SOUND)!!! But it isn't. It isn't morally sound to use violence to get what you want. it isn't morally sound to threaten violence as a way to get what you want. Yet, we - as a nation - model that behavior every day. With the way we are militarizing our police departments, with they way we deploy our military to address international issues, with the way that we incarcerate and kill our own citizens at rates MUCH higher than almost all other 'first world' countries (and quite a few 'third world' ones...). We actually don't need gun control or police reform per se, so much as we need a moral and cultural awakening: one that refuses all versions of dehumanization as a foundation. https://lnkd.in/gBREyp-g

Interesting article on the impacts of a monitored consent decree - first quote is from their police union president, who says that Albuquerque “absolutely did not get what you paid for.” Imagining system reform, centering service and leadership, and valuing a team of professionals from the officer all the way to the top is important - I hope to be part of the examination of these emergent dynamics more clearly. Democracy is under threat, we're told, and it's hard to shake the impression that the greatest danger is posed by democratically elected officials who refuse to accept limits on their power. New Mexico's Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham isn't the first officeholder to decide that the normal give and take of debate and legislation is too much bother, and to attempt to rule by decree. Boosted by pandemic panic, politicians have grown accustomed to declaring "emergencies" as an excuse to behave like monarchs. That said, the public shows signs of being fed up with convenient "emergencies." "Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced on Friday a new public health order that outlines immediate actions aimed at quickly reducing gun violence and illegal drug use in Albuquerque and Bernalillo County," the governor's office announced September 8. "The action plan includes a suspension of open and concealed carry laws in Bernalillo County, temporarily prohibiting the carrying of guns on public property with certain exceptions." As has become common since the appearance of COVID-19, the specifics of the restrictions are contained in a public health order issued by the state's Department of Health Secretary Patrick M. Allen. Here's an article I wrote in 2020 on the disturbing issue of assault on police officers and what needs to be done about it. There's been some progress at a legislative level under the previous Conservative government, but not enough. As a society, we either support our police or we don't. Parliament and our Courts must do better by imposing a mandatory minimum custodial sentence for assaulting a police officer or emergency worker. There should be no wriggle room for this. If we do not do much more in protecting those who are meant to protect us, our society is ripe for anarchy.
