EMS Agencies, REMSCOs, REMACs, Program Agencies and Course Sponsors over the past year continue to be implementing innovation throughout New York State achieving positive results and advancing the field of Emergency Medical Services. If your agency or you know an agency that has solved a problem/gap using innovation, consider self-nomination or nomination of an agency to be one of the 2024 EMS Innovation Award recipients. Innovation Award Categories: Organizational Change Innovations: Innovations in system designs, agency sustainability, and facilitating organizational change. Clinical Delivery Innovations: Innovations in clinical practices that are leading to positive patient outcomes and/or positive patient experiences. Recruitment and Retention Innovations: Innovations in recruitment, onboarding, longevity, staff experience and/or staff satisfaction leading to gaining and retaining staff. Educational Innovations: Innovations in education delivery models, student experience and/or community involvement.

"Every (specializing) physician should do this course as part of their training." This was one of the (many) phrases that stuck with me after we closed our NTS Masterclass non-technical skills team course. And not because of vanity or pride. Yes, of course I/we are super proud that an initial idea, formed and shaped over the few years, then finally realized into something tangible, can have such a huge impact on people participating. We're proud we "did it" and we should be (..we were a bit anxious beforehand, mind you 😅). The operative word here is "we". As a collaborative effort between three people (my colleagues Niko, Marcus and myself) bringing together our various knowledge, interests and general motivation to share and learn, this could never have come to life off the shoulders of just one person. This work needed to be a joint collaboration of like-minded people, with different clinical backgrounds and a shared vision; to make healthcare teams work, even just a bit, better. But what I find most fascinating is that during these three days, we clearly touched upon something that had been on the backs of all these experienced healthcare professionals' minds; how can we better support our teamwork, make it more manageable and safer for us and our patients? 🏥 This seemed to be the driving thought that glued the group together, through various group reflections, LEGO, puzzle and rope exercises and traditional (and non-traditional) simulations. Our small 'ad-hoc' bubble of inspiration, wrapped around themes of teaming, psychological safety, safety culture, stress management, metacognition and non-tech skills, went beyond just micro-level team skills. We created a space to collaboratively explore organizational and cultural change in healthcare teams. We even found leverage points to action. Admittedly, this was surprising, even to us as faculty. 🤩 This course became a gateway to reflection. And I think we need more of these; spaces where a range of different healthcare professionals can step out of their internal professional roles, environments and expectations to just openly reflect, build Legos and share their thoughts on post-its with a bunch of like-minded, then go back home and feel empowered to change things, even small ones.
