It’s National Sorry Day. 🖤 💛💗 On 26 May each year, National Sorry Day marks the tabling of the "Bringing Them Home Report" in the Australian Parliament in 1997 and commemorates Stolen Generations survivors. The Bringing Them Home Inquiry examined the truth of Australia’s Stolen Generations past, and its report shared this truth with the nation. Progress on Breathing Life into the Calls for Justice - A CFJ Progress Report ( Assembly of First Nations - June 3, 2024 ) - on the fifth anniversary of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls ( MMIWG ) Final Report, the Assembly of First Nations ( AFN ) released a new progress report evaluating the advances made in implementing the National Inquiry’s 231 Calls for Justice. The five-year independent review assesses the implementation progress across various themes identified in the National Inquiry’s final report. The findings indicate that only two of the Calls for Justice impacting First Nations have been fully implemented, with the majority showing minimal or no progress. Fast forward 58 years, a previous generation warned us, we failed to heed their call and have arrived. 81% of America is directly impacted by or personally experienced one or more of the following: Blind obedience to government Living paycheck to paycheck Opioid and Obesity crisis Alcohol Addiction Mental Health Incarceration At Risk Youth. Teenage Pregnancy Single Family Moms Poverty Homelessness Suicide High School failure Crime/recidivism Solution. reimagination of everything rooted in the very same principles that gave rise to our nation. A desire that man can govern their own affairs, and that the power of ideas will neccessarily spark the imagination that will neccessarily drive innovation leading to market disruption and prosperity. Its all about the Individual, their Ideas, and Innovation. Foster them well, and inside one generation this nation will return nearly $7.6T lost to disparity back into our economy by moving 90% of the 81% from a liability to an asset. Why the apathy ? Nine of our countrymen lost their lives in a cowardly act yesterday in J & K . Thirty three survivors will never forget this traumatic event., and may face disabilities all their life. I do not sense the moral outrage about what happened. Nobody questioning the administration as to how militants effortlessly cross our fortified borders and impact the lives of innocent citizens and soldiers. Regularly. Who provides local assistance. Who gives them shelter and helps them to escape. How can events like these be prevented in future. What steps does the Government need to take to ensure these recurring events stop permanently. And when can we hope to see any tangible change ? And most importantly why are we so apathetic about this brutal attack on our nation. Why ?

Along with the Purple Book, the NTA's Annual Report to Congress is one of my favorite things to read at the beginning of each year! In it, National Taxpayer Advocate Erin Collins identifies the most serious problems encountered by taxpayers in dealing with the IRS, the most litigated issues, and a treasure trove of data and analysis on how the public and tax practitioners interact with the IRS (or, in the case of many phone calls and paper correspondence, don't interact with the IRS...). The companion Purple Book provides Congress with a road map of how to fix many of the identified problems through legislation. Do they take action? Not usually. But that's not for a lack of TAS's efforts to fix the systemic issues they identify. One of my favorites this year: a recommendation that the IRS re-define what "reasonable cause" means in the context of taxpayers who authorize their return preparers to e-file their returns. The case law on this has been simply awful and - as I bemoaned yesterday at the NYSSCPA - The New York State Society of CPAs's Taxation of Financial Instruments conference - in direct conflict with the IRS's strong preference for e-filing.
