Sister José Women’s Center, a Tucson-based nonprofit, is committed to the mission of aiding and uplifting women experiencing homelessness. At their low-barrier day center, they offer unaccompanied women stability and safety, providing them with a refuge to heal from the harsh realities of life in the United States. There are women centers and women's shelters but there are not enough beds. These elderly women are vulnerable, most of them have chronic illness or battling with dementia. They are experiencing homelessness because they cannot afford housing in Tucson anymore. Sweeping away homeless encampments is not the solution. Tucson, how can we help? The 10 yo and I (plus Eddie George, our puppy Go Bucks!) are heading outside in a few minutes for our 3rd annual, Covenant House Illinois National Sleep Out! Trying to make a small difference for homeless youth in our community. The Covenant House Sleep Out is not just an event; it's a call to action. Every year, thousands of young people face the harsh reality of homelessness. Charlie and I believe that no youth should ever have to endure the streets alone. Cheers also to my 1871 colleague Gabby Snedeker who has been participating for many years and longtime friend James Coleman who introduced me to this important organization. By sleeping out for one night, we stand in solidarity with these resilient young people and raise crucial funds to provide shelter, support, and opportunities for a brighter future. It's about more than spending a night outside; it's about creating awareness and tangible change. I was on a call this week with a large nonprofit that said even the most compassionate donors and volunteers expressed a growing impatience—they want homeless people gone immediately. As visible homelessness increases, so does the flood of media coverage, intentional propaganda, and misinformation aimed at stoking public fear. This has led to a disturbing shift in public sentiment: the overwhelming desire to simply make homelessness disappear, regardless of the human cost. This is now the most significant driving force behind public attitudes toward homelessness. We have failed to properly educate the public on the realities of homelessness and the humanity of homeless people, and we are now witnessing the consequences of that failure. We continue to believe that we can change minds through statistics and empathy. It's clear we must rethink our approach to public communication. We need to critically examine what we’ve communicated in the past and why it hasn't worked. We must invest in strategies that resonate with today’s culture and effectively reach the hearts and minds of the public.

Looking back, being neurodivergent increased a lot of my access issues. Being unorganised, procrastinating, struggling to make that first call due to anxiety. People are surprised that you can come from a financially stable or middle-class home, have a family and still become homeless. It depends on your support network and family dynamics. It's the little things that make a difference. Signposting to grants, housing registers and someone understanding their rights is a big deal. I didn't even know what a housing register was. At Black Heritage Support Service we re-establish communication in families, we advise, advocate for clients, explain processes, design life action plans for clients and signpost if we can't help. We need more funding to continue our work. We will also help anyone of any background, you do not have to be Black or Caribbean. It manifests in various forms, including physical, emotional, psychological, and financial abuse, leaving deep and lasting scars on survivors. In the face of this pervasive problem, numerous organizations have dedicated themselves to providing essential support and advocacy for those impacted by domestic violence. Global Generosity Movement Tuesday November 28, 2023 is a day to focus on ways to contribute to our communities and improve lives of others. HMSHost @ Toronto Pearson YYZ have an annual Warm Weather Drive in support of our Homeless Youth  in Peel Region. We donate coats, gloves, hats, blankets , sweaters, boots and socks to "Our Place Peel". As our cold weather months approach and pressure on affordable housing and shelters our donations will make a difference. A few years ago I rehired an associate who had faced homelessness and had lost his toes from frostbite- our goal is to help the youth and support them during challenging times. Everyone Counts - a Community Report noted the following statistics. ( Peel) 27% of respondents indicated they first experienced homelessness as a youth. 6% of respondents indicated they first experienced homelessness as a child. "Homelessness is often the result of what are known as systemic or societal barriers including a lack of affordable and appropriate housing. the individual/households financial, mental, cognitive, behavioural or physical challenges, and/or racism and discrimination". People who are homeless, though, are more likely to be the targets of crime, rather than the perpetrators. Crime is a real problem, but people experiencing homelessness is a separate issue.
