A Call for Unity and Safety in Our Community Community Members, I hope this letter finds you in good health and spirits, despite the challenging times we find ourselves in. Today, I write to you with a heavy heart, as we mourn the loss of an Oakland police officer who tragically lost their life while on duty. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the impact that gun violence can have on our communities. I understand that there is a strain in our community when it comes to the relationship between law enforcement and the community. However, when a life is taken so tragically, it affects each and every one of us. It is during times like these, when tensions are high and hearts are heavy, that we must come together as a community. I implore both community members and law enforcement officers to take a pause during these trying times. Let us prioritize safety and unity above all else. It is crucial that we work towards building bridges of understanding and trust between law enforcement and the community. By doing so, we can create a safer and more harmonious environment for all. I also ask that we keep the affected families in our thoughts and prayers. They are going through unimaginable pain and loss, and it is our duty as a community to support them in any way we can. Let us extend our compassion and empathy to those who have been impacted by today's tragic events. In the face of adversity, it is important that we stand together as a united community. Let us not allow this incident to further divide us, but instead, let it serve as a catalyst for positive change. Together, we can work towards creating a safer and more inclusive community for everyone. Please stay safe during these challenging times, and remember to look out for one another. Is the Jewish community still relevant today? Why do we need Jewish organizations, and what purpose do they serve in today's world? What values justify our communal efforts? What are the core values that drive our extensive social and communal activities? What strategies can we use to instill a sense of responsibility for all Jews? These are just some of the questions The Center for Jewish Peoplehood Eduction is exploring in its work. I am so excited to have just started a project with Ezra Kopelowitz and the team as they build out a pilot workshop that addresses these and other questions. Together, we are looking at the overarching goals of the organization, examining the needs of the Jewish community in a post October 7 world, and designing this workshop in alignment so that educators walk out with key knowledge and understandings and tangible takeaways to impact their work. I am really inspired by the work of this organization and the people involved -- including the familiar faces of some of their fellows: Alex Pomson, David Bryfman, Samantha Vinokor-Meinrath, Faith Brigham Leener, Osnat Fox.

Join us this Friday and Saturday at the Oak Park Library (just outside Chicago) for the 5th Annual Restorative Practices Conference! This year's conference has a focus on returning citizens, hearing the wisdom of our neighbors who have been incarcerated. I've been involved with this since 2019 and now I'm local so it's even more exciting. I'm a big believer in all things restorative justice (along with its sibling transformative justice). This conference and the people I've met have been a bedrock of my personal healing and community justice work. Register for free here: https://lnkd.in/g874tZUh The evolution in language to restorative practices (from restorative justice) is significant in that it's intended to be a way of being, of moving through the world, rather than simply a reactive technique to resolve conflict. In this way, we hope that we may reduce conflicts and be better equipped to face them in real time so they don't fester and escalate (eventually manifesting as war).
