Last Friday we celebrated the awards. Today, we celebrated the people behind the awards. A grand haul of 18 wins. 7 Gold, 4 Silver, 6 Bronze and 1 Grand Prix! Whilst holding bragging rights for ‘effectiveness’, we are beyond ecstatic to also be crowned as most ‘creative’ at the recent 4As Advertising Festival. We are in a business of ideas and people. And thus, these awards are a culmination in the strong conviction of belief in our ideas and pushing to sell through to the client. We salute the 4As for a brilliantly organized and concluded festival, our clients who believe in us, and the team that rallies together - rain or shine - to bring it all to fruition. We believe dissatisfaction is the mother of reinvention. That’s why our icon is the octopus. It’s the only organism on the planet that routinely edits its own genetic material to adapt, innovate, and thrive. It outsmarts the competition by constantly changing. I love when the driest briefs inspire the most creative work. I love thinking of the McCann team on the receiving end of an ask for a railway safety PSA in Melbourne and what those initial conversations were like. It was an era of viral videos. Gangnam Style, Call Me Maybe, Feist and that Gotye song -- a culture primed to gather attention around just one thing, even for just one news cycle, if it was weird enough, sing-songy enough, absurd enough. The campaign video was posted to YouTube in November 2012 and within two weeks, it had generated at least 50MM of global media value in addition for a fraction of the cost of one TVC. Some critics said it trivializing serious injuries, others said it simply played into the hands of the social media craptrap. In short, it got talked about. A lot. The work won five Grand Prix awards, 18 Gold Lions, three Silver Lions, and two Bronze Lions. It picked up a ton of silverware and went on to inspire plushies, a media company -- in 2021, PlaySide Studios acquired the Dumb Ways to Die franchise for 2.25MM from Metro. I’m adding this to the conversation because great creativity is timeless and borderless and it often comes from the most boring briefs. It transcends one awards season. The Cannes Lions – the major global advertising festival – has just completed and prizes have been awarded. See this AdWeek story about who won what and for what ideas. This is a remarkable event, that showcases the best of what creative minds have generated over the previous year in numerous categories – but all are surprising and impactful with their ingenuity.   Read this and you can pick your own winner – maybe it is the Peruvian cement company, that designed city pathway tiles, that help visually impaired people? What a simple and yet powerful idea. Or maybe it is the Pedigree adoptable dog campaign, that uses artificial intelligence in a helpful and lovely way. There are moving ads that elevate the role of women and girls in sports and societies and also more classic – brand or product selling campaigns, that are beautifully executed, like the Magnum ice cream outdoor campaign.   These campaigns are important not just from a marketing perspective – I think they have a greater societal meaning, as they always deal with relevant issues and blend the traditional media and the latest technology. For Condé Nast, tentpole events (e.g., Met Gala) have been crucial for proving out the value of attention metrics. But... Global Chief Business Officer Deborah Brett "The Met Gala only happens once a year. How do we bring the same formula to every single display and video campaigns across channels (like TikTok)—to have the same impact with attention metrics?" Attention quality score from Moat is gaining favor. Video completion rate has grown more complex—was the sound on? "We are trying to tackle waste—and attention metrics can help us minimize waste." MFAs come up! Drink! Will the blowback against MFAs put more pressure on premium pubs to deliver more? "No one is calling Condé Nast expecting anything less than a very, very premium environment." Proving out incrementality key new focus for sales team—"substantiate the value proposition." However—need third parties to grade our homework, and validate our metrics.
