We aren’t in a black hat era of digital PR, we are in the same position as we was In 2012 when link builders do what they can to get links fast and cheap and manipulate Google to thinking that it’s a signal of trust and authority Link builders are just packaging it up as digital PR (which they also did in 2014 ish) and that’s where the demand is Here’s what you should know or do about it: 👉🏼 be clear what side of the fence you’re on (and why). What do you believe makes high value signals of trust and authority? 👉🏼 call it out. Ok I’m not in the market of publically shaming on social media, but I would happily tell clients , ex clients or future clients what good and bad looks like (and why) 👉🏼 don’t race to the bottom - we’re in a price war. People are quitting digital Pr because they can’t get cheap enough to compete against the cowboys. Don’t go cheaper, go better. Add more value 👉🏼 know your audience - there’s an audience that will buy that, and audience that know what good quality is.

Don’t get it twisted. There is a better way to approach your marketing, a better way to breakthrough. First, start with strategy before tactics. There is no reason to post on social media or put out a press release without first figuring out who you are, your unique value proposition, and how you are going to break through the noise with an extraordinary idea. Only then does it make sense to invest in tactics like social, public relations, creative etc etc. Second, there is no point in being impactful with your marketing if it is not sustainable. You must be able to be afford to execute your strategy for a sustained period of time, repeatedly and consistently. Prove to your movement who you are and build the trust required to become a brand. It's been great to see all the discussion about terrible Digital PR campaigns. Ones that just get links from garbage right wing rags, gambling links that are about skincare and all sorts of nonsense. While it's funny to mock the outlets and the journalists who fell for the trick. It's more important if you're a business buying this kind of service that you actually look at your results. No not how many DA70s you got... Your actual results. Did you actually grow your gambling business, for example, faster doing all those expensive PR campaigns vs brands who built relevant links from the iGaming sector? If you're just looking at a short term spike (which is common with digital PR) and celebrating instead of looking back a couple of years later at your work vs your competitors work and seeing if... it actually worked... What do publicists actually do? This is a question I get a TON! So, I figured why not go into detail about it 😎 There are lots of different publicists, but for the most part — we, (I), pursue “organic” press opportunities. This means that I don’t pursue paid Ads and instead rely on my relationships with media contacts & my understanding of newsworthy story angles to secure press features. This type of media coverage allows audiences to connect with brands on a much deeper level…because it doesn’t. feel. salesy. People aren’t stupid. We know when we’re being sold to! The way that I think about organic press is, you get to nurture relationships with your audiences on a mass scale, create a strong brand image, and inspire a positive buying culture as a byproduct of your new brand awareness.
