This is an important and much needed perspective as generational assumptions and stereotypes continue to plague the workplace. Here Heidi Brooks presents relevant research and a refreshing view of how organizations can embrace and benefit from the latest cohort to enter the workforce, Gen Z. She writes: “Much has been written and talked about the necessity of ‘training’ Gen Z to integrate into the workforce. But perhaps leaders and managers should be considering how to nudge collaborative capacity across generations, taking a journey of discovery, with the objective of co-creating updated workplace norms.” One of my forms of listening to this generation is to read. I have made a conscious effort to read works from young writers, in their twenties and early thirties. I’m learning that “Gen Z” is not a homogeneous blob, any more than any other generational cohort is. Yes, they have been shaped by a unique set of circumstances and technologies that didn’t exist when many of us were growing up, but there is also tremendous and exciting diversity of life experience, thought, passion, and worldview in this group. There have always been tensions between generations and older generations have always despaired over the values and norms of the generations behind them. The difference here, I think, is that technology offers this cohort a massive voice and huge cultural influence. I think for many older cohorts, this can feel frightening. But what if it could be leveraged? What if we could learn and collaborate and work across generations, each bringing a unique vantage point from different developmental stages and life experiences? What might be possible? I have written about this before. The way forward, I think, is to stop judging each other and to listen and learn. 

In 2024, it’s time to drop the narrative that Gen-Z are lazy 🙅♀️ Each generation seems to say a similar thing about the next and it’s time to start supporting each other! Here’s the facts: 👉 Gen-Z want to be compensated fairly for the work they do 👉 Gen-Z want their work-life balance boundaries to be respected 👉 Gen-Z want to do purposeful work that has a real impact Things that I’m pretty sure other generations also want/wanted. The only difference is, if these objectives are not met, we can be more ballsy in the way we go about fulfilling them. What do you think? After seeing Mick's post, there is no way I could share anything else. How appropriate is this when it comes to the work we do on a daily basis? Feeding off my post from yesterday, which was based on the quote by Kumud Deepali Rudraraju: "When someone tries to bring you down, REMEMBER confidence is quiet, insecurity is loud," I talked about the importance of the people we surround ourselves with, both personally and professionally. This image speaks volumes about our daily grind. Working hard for something we don't care about leads to stress, but working hard for what we love? That’s pure passion.
