Don’t quit your side hustle!
As a career coach, many people reach out to me in crisis. Either they want to make a change but they don’t know what or they’ve left their role and don’t know how to clearly articulate their next steps.
“Do you have an identity outside of your job?”
This question catches a lot of people off guard. They have spent very little time cultivating who they are outside of their day job. They either didn’t feel like they had permission to have a separate identity, or they didn’t know they should.
DON’T QUIT YOUR SIDE HUSTLE.
The only one responsible for developing you is YOU.
If you have a side hustle and someone claims it’s a distraction or keeping you from your full potential, ask yourself how you can live to your full potential if you aren’t cultivating every aspect of your being.
If you don’t have a side hustle and feel like something is missing, try something. Try anything. Give yourself permission to be terrible again. You had to be terrible at some point to get to where you are.
I’ve always had a bunch of stuff going on and it takes discipline and falling on my face from time to time to rebalance the portfolio. I don’t recommend doing what I do but I do recommend not waiting on your employer to fulfill you. If you do it right, you’ll be able to pull from the myriad of experiences to live a fulfilling life and career and future-proof yourself against a litany of unknowns. I got my first big promotion, admitted to Harvard Business School and access to some of my most impactful mentors in business because I play the saxophone. Not well enough to quit my day job, but in ways that have always added significant value.
I’ve yet to meet someone who wishes they didn’t have something they were truly passionate about outside of work.
Please let me know your thoughts and please share your side hustle.
Beautiful!!!
