Did you know that three-fourths of older workers blame age discrimination for their lack of confidence in finding a new job? To bring attention to this critical issue, we conducted a social experiment by setting up a fake business that gave out free gift baskets. The results were eye-opening, exposing the barriers and ageist assumptions that older workers face in the job search process. It's time to address and combat age discrimination in the workplace to create a more inclusive and equitable job market for all ages. #AgeDiscrimination #InclusiveWorkplace #DiversityAndInclusion #WorkplaceEquity #ProfessionalGrowth
Workplaces thrive on diversity, and that includes the contributions of workers of all ages. Whether you're just starting your career or bringing decades of experience, everyone has unique skills, perspectives, and insights to offer. Embracing this diversity fosters a more inclusive environment and drives innovation and success. We should ensure that talent and dedication, not age, are what truly matter in our workplaces. 👏
Combating age discrimination is not only a legal and ethical imperative but also a strategic advantage for organizations. It promotes a diverse, inclusive, and productive workforce that can drive innovation, enhance employee morale, and improve overall business performance.
Absolutely! I've faced aged discrimination from some of the largest Assisted Living Communities in the US when I recently relocated and tried to reenter the Workforce as a Director of Sales/Marketing. I performed this exact job for Sunrise Assisted Living from Grand Opening past fill. Instead, I received courtesy telephone pre-interviews for pre-screenings so they could meet their EEO candidate quotas for age and disability numbers. Rarely did I get the actual interview and never the job. It's hard to prove Age Discrimination but it exists and we know when it occurs. Especially, when I had been a HR Director in the past. They're not pulling the wool over my eyes. They're just getting away with it. Do they think I will recommend their community for care? Those companies may want to think twice that answer is No. I also owned my own Care Management business and if the best they can do is use me for an EEO number I question their standard of care. I was fortunate to get a job with a company that values the diversity and experience that I offer! Every day is a real joy to be working with the Staff and the Patients! Thanks to Teena and Steven and the entire hiring team! I feel blessed!
I'm currently under 40, but someday I won't be. That's the reality of age discrimination—many of us will eventually reach an age that might not fit someone's ideal candidate profile. That's why I believe AARP is doing important work, and why everyone, regardless of age, should contribute to creating inclusive workplaces.
Welcome to our world….. sure nobody’s saying this out loud, but they certainly are thinking it. I love them trying to be kind tech wise to the guy who is older and is a computer programmer. There’s one for you.
Until all companies understand the value of a generationally diverse workplace, older job seekers need to target their job search to the organizations that already do. It’s also especially important they become experts at self advocacy who can articulate their value-added and speak to addressing company pain points.
How does setting up a social experiment help? Awareness maybe jobs no.
Too hard to prove. The company just makes up another reason .

1moA lack of intergenerational mix in the workplace is contributing to a lack of understanding on both sides -things such as a gap in conveying professional workplace protocols and soft skills to those just entering the workplace, unrealistic workplace demands that go unchecked, bringing to light new, more efficient ways to complete work, promotion and wage expectations that are out of alignment, unawareness of the demands each gen faces in their personal lives that impact work life that could be surfaced with two-way mentoring/familiarity. "Youth-centric" conveys a distortion of reality and short changes younger gens on how to grow professionally, stay enthused and engaged and overcome setbacks, as one ages. If young people believe they will be "washed up" by 40, no wonder many think in terms of a brief timeline.
