On Saturday, after three months of meticulous planning and preparation, I successfully hosted the "AI Essentials for Educators" conference in Southwestern Ohio. It was a fantastic day with great weather and enthusiastic attendees from as far as Columbus and Cleveland. The event attracted a diverse group of educators, from those at elementary to high school levels, across both public and private sectors, and with varying degrees of tech expertise. One of the highlights of the conference was the hands-on sessions with various AI tools. Participants delved into the nuances of major AI models, experimented with integrating AI at different stages of the writing cycle, developed AI-driven I-Search writing assignments, and tackled the challenge of balancing AI’s tendency for agreeability with the need for accuracy. These sessions weren't just instructional—they were transformative, pushing both the technology and our understanding of its potential in education. One conference attendee, Marty Frasier, who gave me permission to use his response, commented: "As an English teacher and Dean of Faculty, I have been trying to figure out how to approach AI in my own classroom and also as a professional development tool. This conference allowed me to think about how to navigate AI at a variety of levels--from the most on-the-ground level in classroom settings to higher level policy and ethical considerations across educational institutions. I appreciated the range of opportunities to dig into complex questions and left with concrete next steps as well as sustained inspiration to keep tackling this new frontier." Thanks, Marty!!! Embracing Change in an AI-Infused World: A Call to Action for Educators In conversations about progress and innovation, the desire for change is a common refrain. Yet, when faced with the reality of implementing change, the enthusiasm often wanes. The hard work, the challenges, the stepping out of comfort zones—all of these aspects can make the prospect of real change daunting. But as we navigate this new AI-infused world that our students are about to inherit, is the mere desire for change sufficient? The answer is a resounding no. Wanting change and actively pursuing it are vastly different. As educators, we are at a pivotal moment where the decisions we make today will significantly impact the education we provide our students tomorrow. With AI reshaping industries, economies, and societies, it's imperative that we do more than just aspire to adapt; we need to take concrete steps toward change. This leads us to ask ourselves critical questions: "What do we need to change to be more contextually relevant in an AI-driven future?" and "Is a mere change to pedagogy enough, or do we need to fundamentally overhaul our outdated systems?" These questions aren't just rhetorical—they demand introspection, dialogue, and action from all of us in the educational community. Change, especially in the context of integrating AI into education, requires a shift in mindset, a willingness to experiment, and a commitment to continuous learning. It's about reevaluating our curriculum, teaching methods, and the very structure of our educational systems to ensure they're aligned with the demands of the 21st century. As we stand at the crossroads of tradition and innovation, it's clear that the path forward isn't just about incremental adjustments. It's about boldly reimagining education to prepare our students for a world where AI is as fundamental as reading and writing were to previous generations. The journey ahead is filled with unknowns, but one thing is certain: the time for action is now. Let's not just talk about wanting change; let's be the architects of it.
