Connecting, unexpectedly. I used to be based in a really nice office in a building that had gleaming lifts, and one day I decided to take a photo of myself in the shiny reflection. It didn't look bad so I posted it, and from then onwards, most days, I'd take a photo of my reflection in the minute or so that it took from the basement carpark to 10th floor where my office was, or on my way back down, and I'd post it. Most days I was in full suits with my full serious mode on. But some days, knowing it would be a day of elbow grease, I'd be more casual, more playful.. and my reflection would capture that. And I love it! I mean, what's work without some fun, right? These light-hearted posts, initially just for fun, turned into shared moments. I soon realised that my friends loved them too, as I received suggestions for hashtags and messages of concern if I miss a couple of days (are you ok, you haven't been to work for days!). I received a lot of comments about what I was wearing, and lots of fashion tips, and to be honest I'm not sure why anyone cared what I was wearing to work every day — I suppose it wasn't about fashion; they were check-ins with my network that brought unexpected joy and engagement. I've since moved out of that office, and the building had renovated and now has even shinier lifts; and yes, some times, I miss those days. Reflecting on those lift selfies, it's clear now they were more than just photos — they were a means to connect. Every outfit, every smile, each picture invited conversations, creating a daily touchpoint with my circle. It's those interactions, those moments of shared laughter and lightness, that often spark the most genuine connections. Even away from the glossy elevators, the value of those connections endures. It's a powerful reminder that it's our ability to connect on a human level that brightens up the day. The "Perfect Condition" Problem In true Melbourne fashion, a chilly day in our 'summer' got me thinking about the challenges of creating one optimal condition for everyone at work and how incredibly unrealistic that is. During a long run along the Melbourne coast, I couldn't help but notice the stark contrast in beach activity. The super windy, cold day had cleared out all beachgoers on one side, while just a pesky 1km further down, I spotted a multitude of windsurfers making the most of the conditions. It struck me how the same environmental conditions that deterred one group created the perfect opportunity for another to excel. It was a vivid reminder that we all thrive in different environments. By diversifying workspaces and creating different environments for people, we can unlock opportunities for optimal productivity and job satisfaction.
