70 years ago today, the landmark Supreme Court decision of Brown v. The Board of Education declared state laws establishing racial segregation in public schools to be unconstitutional, a pivotal moment in the fight for civil rights and education equity in the United States. This profound movement toward justice for Black children is one that remains pertinent today in education and beyond. We honor this milestone as a commemoration of past achievements and as a reaffirmation of our commitment to the present and future rights of Black children. While we celebrate the progress made since 1954, we also recognize the ongoing challenges and disparities that persist in education today. As we reflect on this momentous day, we reaffirm our dedication to advocate for policies that ensure equitable educational opportunities for all children. Our work continues to dismantle systemic barriers and promote an inclusive, supportive educational environment for every child, in every community. Join us in honoring this historic day and in continuing the work that remains. Together, we can uphold the spirit of Brown v. Board of Education by ensuring that the promise of education equity is realized for every child. #BrownvBoard70 #EducationEquity

Black families deserve to be physically safe in schools. Physical safety is more than lighting and clean facilities. I am presenting at the CAAASA 2024 conference on March 15th from 11 am -12:00 pm. We will be unpacking school cultures, structures, and policies that help or hinder Black family engagement with schools. You don't want to miss how school leaders deal with Rebekkah's behavior. #casestudies #hospitality #generous #rigid #safety #accountability #data #communityengagement #Blackfamilies #communityactualization #schools #administrators #schoolleaders Scenario: Addressing Racist and Misogynoir Behaviors Background: Rebekkah, a teacher at Lincoln High School, has recently been exhibiting behaviors that have been described as racist, stereotypical, and misogynoir (a term describing misogyny directed towards Black women). Several students and colleagues have reported instances where Rebekkah has made racially insensitive comments, perpetuated harmful stereotypes about Black women, and demonstrated bias in her interactions with students and staff.

In this article, Dr. Leslie Fenwick discusses the expulsion of Black principals and teachers from desegregating schools after Brown v. Board. In the article, Dr. Fenwick explains that discriminatory (and often illegal) removal of Black educators started as early as 1952 and lasted “well into the 1970s.” Dr. Fenwick goes on to say that, “Today, the nation, not to mention our public education system, is still living with the fallout [of Black teacher removal after Brown v. Board]: traumatized Black school children; roughly $1-2 billion in salary losses and the largest orchestrated brain drain ever experienced in the U.S. public education system.” This article (and the rest of Dr. Fenwick’s published work) shows how the segregation of the past perniciously persists into the present. That’s why we’re highlighting her work (like our podcast episode with Dr. Fenwick, which you can listen to with our link in bio). We’re highlighting it to show how school segregation still happens today and how it often happens in insidious ways. Yes, Brown v. Board made school segregation federally illegal, but that doesn’t mean Brown v. Board actually ended segregation. In fact, in the midst of progressive strides like Brown v. Board, those that refused to let go of segregation found a way (and continue to find a way) to limit and thwart integration anywhere they can such as removing and discriminating against Black teachers. So, what exactly is the school-to-prison pipeline? It's a systemic issue that channels students, particularly black boys, from classrooms directly into the criminal justice system. Let me break it down for you. Have you ever stepped into a school's In-School Suspension (ISS) classroom? If not, take a moment to observe. These rooms often harbor a disproportionate number of black boys compared to other racial groups. Why, you might wonder? Well, it boils down to the implementation of harsh disciplinary measures in schools, which tend to unfairly target black boys for minor infractions, setting them on a trajectory of exclusion rather than support. These unjust patterns of punishment not only deprive them of classroom learning opportunities but also strip away their futures, ultimately leading many to drop out of school. Unfortunately, dropping out places them squarely within the pipeline, as statistics consistently show that educational disengagement correlates with higher rates of involvement in criminal activities. Can you see the systemic inequality at play here? But we refuse to accept this narrative. Every child, regardless of background, deserves an equal shot at education, not incarceration. Together, we can dismantle this pipeline and forge a brighter future for all. Click below for access to my E-book, Raising Brilliant Black Bous: Strategies to Disrupt the School-to-Prison Pipeline. This powerful E-book with strategies and tips for parents of black boys will be available on February 15th. #BreakThePipeline #EducationForAll #JusticeForBlackBoys #BrilliantBlackBoys #SONshines🌟 https://lnkd.in/et7RjbqF

Nearly 70 years ago, the landmark decision of Brown v. Board of Education set a new course for education in America, declaring state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional. This was not just a victory for those brave students and families who fought for their rights, but a beacon of hope for generations to come. Yet, the journey toward realizing the full promise of Brown v. Board continues. Across the nation, disparities in resources, opportunities, and inclusive environments in schools remind us that the fight for educational equity is ongoing. As we commemorate the 70th anniversary of this pivotal moment, we are called upon to renew our commitment to advocacy, action, and dialogue. It's a call to ensure that the principles of equity, inclusion, and diversity are not just ideals, but realities in every classroom. 🌟 Join us in honoring the legacy of Brown v. Board by actively contributing to the progress that still needs to be made. 🌟 Education is the foundation of opportunity, and every child deserves a school that opens doors, not closes them. Let's work together to create an educational system that reflects the richness and potential of every student. 🔗 For more information on the commemoration event and how you can participate, visit https://lnkd.in/gtzj6NVD #BrownvBoard70 #EducationalEquity #TheJourneyContinues #AdvocacyInAction #InclusiveEducation

Dear Equity and Justice Supporters, In 2023, Bridges Leadership & Education Services LLC was able to partner with local and national organizations to support family engagement with learning. Through our institutes, we partnered with community organizations that focused on literacy, art, college & and career readiness, youth activism, and academic achievement. This year we are partnering with organizations for Black students’ well-being, suicide prevention, smoking cessation, and bullying prevention. Bridges was able to provide workshops at global conferences focused on supporting Black children and youth in schools. One conference, Centering the Black Child, gave us the time to meet with over 200+ participants who wanted to learn about practices that affirm Black children in schools. We also provided Keynotes that provided instruction and inspiration to help people leading in schools to center safety and belonging in diverse family engagement practices and policies. It was your support that made it partially possible. Thank you for partnering with us in the past to provide high-quality services in the form of institutes, trainings, and keynotes, to build the capacity of those working in your organization to deliver valuable services to students, staff, faculty, and families. Back by popular demand are our Black family engagement institutes. These 2-3 in-person events only happen 2-3 times a year. We also offer keynotes, and workshops to build capacity to partner with BIPOC families. Our special sauce is Black family engagement. Check out our services in this short video to learn more. #Blackfamilies #schoolpartnerships #AAPC #AAPAC #familyengagement #involvement #sustainingpractices #affirmingpractices #collectives
