Today's big story is that Aramco in Saudi Arabia will ditch plans to add another 1 md/d production to spare capacity. Aramco did not provide a rationale behind the decision. The bearish view: Saudi Arabia already has 3 mb/d of spare capacity. Hence, it makes good sense as the capacity is likely unnecessary for the foreseeable future. Non-OPEC supply growth is strong, and demand growth is lacklustre. On top of that, the green transition will further keep demand growth muted. The bullish view: But it might also be an acknowledgement that a high level of spare capacity is not very good for a cartel. One way of pushing prices higher for a cartel is if the market has to add a risk premium. But with 3 mb/d spare capacity, no one in the oil market is concerned about the supply situation. This explains why oil is not reacting significantly to the tensions in the Middle East. There is plenty of room for the responsible Saudis to step in.    On the margin, I think this is positive for oil prices. But spare capacity will not change tomorrow. Hence, hardly anything that will impact prices in the short term.

Ameen Al-Naser Executive Presidnet of Aramco told an online press confernce today on the ocassion of publishing annual results of Aramco: “We have the capacity to increase our oil exports via the Saudi East-West pipeline if required to 7 million b/d (from current 3 million b/d) without going through Bab Al-Mandeb. Asked how long it would take Aramco to increase production to 13 million b/d if the government asked Aramco to do so: Ameen Al-Naser said: "it would take 4 to 5 years to increase production to 13 million.
