Some of the biggest mistakes I see when rightsholders and brands are talking about potential sports partnership deals: *Abbreviated discovery: everyone wants to move fast, get deals done, spend their allocated budget...I get it. But this is a recipe for a poorly constructed sponsorship and hangs the people executing out to dry. Proper due diligence and probing will allow you to avoid the "hurry up and wait" situation. *Misalignment of assets and expected results: it sounds crazy but you would be surprised how often brands are sold the wrong inventory based on what they actually want to achieve through a partnership. *Assuming brands always know what they want: they may think they know, but when you drill deeper into goals and KPIs, it's different. Properties should be doing their own research and proactively coming to the table with proposed solutions based on what they're hearing from the brand or their agency. *Not understanding how sponsorship fits into a brand's larger marketing efforts: sponsorship on an island doesn't maximize a brand's ROI. Both properties and brands need to fully understand how partnership marketing ladders up to the rest of the marketing organization. *The budget crutch: properties are too afraid of pitching an awesome, out-of-the-box idea that solves a brand's objectives because it's "not in the budget the brand gave." Offering a stretch idea is great for a number of reasons. What does success look like to you? It's worth repeating and it's definitely worth some of your time thinking about. As the padel industry grows it means there is more competition, more of your rivals after the same clients. Interestingly, I recently engaged with a company who didn't think they had any competition. That's a red flag to us in PR. Trust me, you do. So, how do you stay ahead of the competition. You raise your profile, you build trust, you have 'ambassadors' that are on message. PR activities do all of this. This is the fourth week in a row in securing coverage for Soul Padel and in four very different sectors of the media. This doesn't happen by chance. Importantly you also need a budget. The would-be client with no competitors, also knew they had no budget. It's a common occurrence. If you're investing in a business, developing new products, opening new locations, signing new deals then you need a budget. The same goes for PR. What does success look like to you? 🤔 Increase in memberships? Hosting a great tournament? Securing a sponsorship deal? Landing an investor.... Whatever your goals are, public relations has significant part to play. Having a PR expert on your team does make a difference. Securing 'earned media' improves your credibility. Your own channels (social media and website) are good additional touch points. But getting coverage - print, online, broadcast- adds much more. 🎯 And we all know it.
