It is important for businesses in the hospitality industry, such as a five-star hotel, to consider occupational safety and health assessment, including during special months like Ramadan. Here are some key considerations for ensuring the safety and well-being of employees during this time: 1. **Accommodating Observance of Ramadan**: Recognize that employees observing Ramadan may have special needs related to fasting, prayer, and rest. Consider adjusting work schedules and tasks to accommodate these needs. 2. **Reviewing Work Processes**: Assess work processes to identify any potential safety risks that may be heightened during Ramadan due to factors such as fatigue or dehydration. Take steps to mitigate these risks. 3. **Providing Training and Awareness**: Ensure that employees are aware of their rights, responsibilities, and resources related to occupational safety and health. Provide training on topics such as fatigue management, hydration, and emergency procedures. 4. **Maintaining Hygiene and Cleanliness**: Pay extra attention to hygiene and cleanliness practices, especially in food preparation and handling areas, to prevent foodborne illnesses during Ramadan. 5. **Creating a Supportive Environment**: Foster a supportive and inclusive work environment where employees feel comfortable discussing their needs and concerns related to Ramadan and occupational safety. 6. **Implementing Safety Protocols**: Enforce safety protocols and procedures to prevent workplace accidents and injuries, especially during busy periods in the hospitality industry. 7. **Engaging with Occupational Safety and Health Authorities**: Stay updated on any guidelines or recommendations from OSHA or other occupational safety authorities regarding workplace safety during Ramadan. By proactively addressing occupational safety and health concerns during the special month of Ramadan, five-star hospitality businesses can create a safe and supportive environment for all employees.

The case study focuses on the Work Health and Safety (WHS) principles applied in a scenario involving Good Catering, a company providing food services at a festival, and Event Labour, a labour hire service supplying staff. Both entities, as PCBUs (Persons Conducting a Business or Undertaking), share responsibility for the health and safety of the labour hire workers at the event. S19 - Both PCBUs have a primary duty of care for the labour hire workers. Good Catering (the host PCBU) and Event Labour (the labour hire PCBU) need to collaborate to manage health and safety risks effectively. The PCBUs must discuss and agree on safety measures, such as worker training and equipment usage, and consult on managing risks like hazardous chemicals and adverse weather conditions. They must implement risk controls and regularly review them. For instance, moving a mobile cool room to avoid worker collisions and ensuring adequate procedures for adverse weather. PCBUs need to notify each other and the regulator about any incidents and collaborate on investigations and preventive measures. The study underscores the importance of coordination between duty holders to ensure a safe working environment and compliance with WHS obligations.

Health & Safety Tips During Ramadan. Any task which involves concentration can be more challenging during Ramadan. A key fact is to be aware that your response times are slower and reaction times are longer. Understand the effects of fasting: • Reduced concentration, and stress due to the changes in normal routine. • Dehydration is common during fasting. • Headaches during a fast could be due to dehydration or hunger, poor rest, or the absence of addictive substances, such as caffeine. • Habits associated with Ramadan can contribute to fatigue during working hours. General tips: • Scheduling critical tasks early in the day while fasting, when concentration levels are at their highest. • Remind workers who are fasting that they have to take breaks and tell their supervisor if they feel unwell or unable to carry out their work safely. • Try to avoid Heat exposure as much as possible while fasting, take frequent breaks in a cool place. • Large amounts of strong coffee should be avoided during Iftar and Sohur as the caffeine in coffee can increase the loss of water from the body, leading to thirst and dehydration. • Sugary drinks should be avoided during Sohur as they can result in a rapid rise and subsequent fall in blood sugar levels during the day. • Get adequate sleep to sustain you throughout the day. • Break your fast lightly with water, dates, fruits, low fact milk to avoid indigestion.

Anna made the biggest mistake at her workplace… Could have cost her life It simply could have been avoided only if she was well aware of her environment. Now looking back she wished she did things differently. She was so lost in thoughts 💭 while she walked down the staircase of the factory site that she overlooked the wet sign board the cleaners put at the bottom. It was like everything happened so fast in a split second she couldn’t comprehend it, as she fell down the staircase with a loud thump on the ground, down she went. People gathered around her for a moment then she blacked out. Only to see herself awake an hour later at the clinic, her body was in pain, and her ankle was twisted so badly. She cried, proper medication was given to her and she was told to rest up at home till she healed. It was at that moment she really wished she could turn back the hands of time then she wouldn’t be going through all this. The Health Safety and Environmental(HSE) team showed up to assess the situation, and finding out it was an accident they lectured her on how to be safe in her surroundings, the do’s and the don’t for a successful work life with no hazards. Yesterday, we concluded the Health Safety and Environmental (HSE) week🎉🎉. It was a fun time learning from our top managers about health safety in our environment. The theme for the week was, “Building a Culture of Health and Safety”. We engaged in training, quizzes, and fun activities. A company cannot truly function if the safety of its workers is not paramount, not only does it protect your most valuable asset—your employees, but it also contributes to a more productive and thriving workplace environment. Some guides to follow to have a safe workplace include but are not limited to… 📍Prioritize safety by adhering to the rules and regulations put in place by the HSE in the company. Invest quality time in knowing these rules and obeying them. 📍Report any potential safety risks or concerns. 📍 Wear appropriate protective equipment, and actively participate in safety initiatives and training sessions. 📍 Encourage accountability by holding individuals accountable for their actions, recognizing and rewarding safe behaviors, and addressing any safety violations or concerns promptly and effectively. 📍Familiarize staff with emergency procedures and regularly simulate scenarios to improve the ability to handle real-life emergencies. I am a safety champion☺️🏆. I will continue to prioritize my safety and others' safety as well. Thank you to the The FMN Group for this wonderful opportunity to participate in this program. #FMNHSEWEEK2024 #NEVERAGAINONOURWATCH PS: Don’t forget to prioritize you first, your health matters👍🏽 I am Oluoba Kenechukwu, A strategic copywriter, I use words and compelling stories to convert sales and ensure companies surpass their marketing goals. Let's talk about Safety 😊 How safe are you? You may be wondering why I'm always talking about safety all the time! it's either Food safety or Occupational Health and Safety! So,now...last year on the 5th -8th of September2023.. I got the opportunity to attend a training on the Occupational Safety and Health Committee Training courtesy of my employer. The training was coordinated by a well seasoned team of trainers who motivated us to embrace implementing safe practices at work place. Why safe practices? The trainer noted that most employers underestimate the need of implementing occupational safety and Health. Occupational health and safety is the protection of employees from injuries due to work related accidents. Apart from the protection of the employees. I work in a healthcare facility thus the need for safety of the patients and other stakeholders. What is the implication when the employees and other stakeholders are injured? 📌Non productivity-health and safety issue like manual handling and the risk of musculoskeletal disorders, slips, trips, fall , hazardous chemicals, cuts and burns affect the daily activities of an organization. 📌Employers face high cost of compensations on employees who have been injured, 📌Staff loss due to incapacitation from injuries sustained 📌Abseentism -sick off due to work related accidents. What really stood out to me on this particular training are the risks associated with my area of practice and how heavily affects the operations and business at large. Lessons learnt; 📍Never underestimate the power of well oriented teams in matters health and safety. 📍Leaders and employees in the Hospitality industry and other sectors of the economy should embrace safe work practices to avoid the above issues. 📍bridge the gap between theory and practice by continuously training teams on matters Occupational Safety and Health. 📍Any small UNSAFE act can lead to an accident. The training has positively changed my perspective on matters safety. Accidents occur anywhere, even at our homes! Please stay safe wherever you are my LinkedIn team😊 You need help in matters Safety? Comment O.S.H I will be glad to connect with you and engage more. #globallinkedinbootcampwithmuthoni #shareyourstorywithmuthoni

Industrial hygiene vs Occupational hygiene Industrial hygiene and occupational hygiene are two related fields that focus on the health and safety of workers in various industries. Industrial hygiene refers to the practice of identifying, evaluating, and controlling workplace hazards to ensure the health and safety of workers. It aims to prevent occupational illnesses and injuries by implementing measures to reduce or eliminate exposure to harmful substances and conditions in the workplace. Industrial hygienists typically assess workplace environments for potential hazards such as chemical, biological, physical, and ergonomic factors, and develop strategies to protect workers from these risks. On the other hand, occupational hygiene focuses on the assessment and management of workplace risks to protect the health and well-being of workers. It involves the systematic identification, evaluation, and control of hazards in the workplace, including chemical, physical, biological, and psychosocial factors. Occupational hygienists use scientific principles and techniques to measure and monitor exposure levels, assess health risks, and develop control strategies to minimize or eliminate hazards in the workplace. One key difference between industrial hygiene and occupational hygiene is their scope of practice. Industrial hygiene is typically broader in scope, encompassing a wide range of workplace hazards and industries, while occupational hygiene may focus more specifically on certain industries or types of hazards. Industrial hygienists may work in a variety of settings, from manufacturing and construction to healthcare and mining, whereas occupational hygienists may specialize in specific sectors such as mining, manufacturing, or healthcare. Another difference is the focus on prevention versus assessment and control. Industrial hygiene places a strong emphasis on proactive prevention measures to eliminate hazards before they pose a risk to workers, while occupational hygiene may focus more on assessing and managing existing risks to protect workers from harm. Industrial hygienists may conduct risk assessments, develop exposure control plans, and implement engineering controls to reduce hazards at their source, while occupational hygienists may focus on monitoring and evaluating exposure levels, conducting health risk assessments, and recommending control measures to mitigate risks. While industrial hygiene and occupational hygiene share similar goals of protecting in the workplace, they differ in their focus, scope, and approach to managing workplace hazards. Industrial hygiene aims to prevent occupational illnesses and injuries by identifying and controlling hazards at their source, while occupational hygiene focuses on assessing and managing risks to protect workers from harm. #Hygiene #Industrialhygiene #occupationalhygiene #Health
