It was a pleasure to join James Appleby, CEO of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) for this conversation on Financial Caregiving - a topic explored in recently released TIAA Institute research. James and I discussed the financial dimensions of caregiving and actions that families, employers and policymakers can take to address this critical need. Caregiving expenses, which can be substantial, have rarely been a focus of traditional financial planning, putting retirement security at risk. Too many people are taking on the role of financial caregiving without adequate information or support. We can all use this knowledge to make and support more informed decisions so we can be a leader in our community. Our hope is to work towards a financial future in which we are not only living longer, but also living healthily and with longevity fitness. 👵👴 One in 10 Gen Xers spend more than state pension on care. Recent research from Just Group reveals that 11% of those born between 1965 and 1980 are shelling out an average of £237.50 per week to look after their elderly relatives. 💸 That adds up to a staggering £12,350 a year—over £800 more than the annual full state pension of £11,542. And it’s not just about the money. The majority of these caregivers report feeling financially and emotionally drained, with 54% feeling poorer and 53% more tired. Plus, nearly 40% feel utterly unprepared for the toll it takes, and 42% are stressed by the demands of caregiving. This places Gen X in a precarious position. 👇 Known as Generation Anxiety, they’re not only caring for aging parents but also managing mortgages, supporting their children, and trying to save for their own retirements. 💼 All this during uncertain economic times that demand working later into life. It’s clear: we need policies that address the real costs of caregiving. Source: https://lnkd.in/ej5GGvEm #GenX #GenerationAnxiety #Generations #Care #Pension

UKI Head of Employee Wellbeing at Unilever - bringing my unique style to empower people to be healthy, safe and well
Speaking as someone providing support for ageing parents, it really is something you're never prepared for - both the emotional, physical and mental pressure that it puts on you. All exacerbated by the fact you never feel like you're doing quite enough - child guilt! Which is why having a supportive workplace is crucial in allowing caregivers the flexibility they need to do both their jobs and their caring roles justice. Employers should understand the toll that this can take, and take steps to ensure they've got the right policies, support and culture in place to ease that burden. #Carer #EmployeeWellbeing
