📃Scientific paper: Erythropoietin attenuates locomotor and cognitive impairments in male rats subjected to physical and psychological stress Abstract: Physical and cognitive problems associated with stress are believed to result from stress-related damage to neurons involved in motor and cognitive control. In general, there are two types of stress, physical and psychological which both negatively impact neuronal function. Erythropoietin (EPO) has been shown to exert a neuroprotective effect in various models of physical brain injury; however, its actions on stress-related changes in behavior are unknown. The aim of the current study was to determine whether EPO ameliorated stress-induced locomotor and cognitive impairments, and to compare the effects of EPO on behavioral changes induced by the two different types of stressors. In this study, male Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups and placed under physical or psychological stress for 10 consecutive days while erythropoietin was injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) every other day (500 U/kg/i.p.) 30 min before stress induction. Exploratory, anxiety-related behaviors, learning and memory were assessed by using open field, plus maze and Morris Water Maze (MWM) tests respectively. Our data showed physical and psychological stress induced dysfunction in locomotion, reduced explorative skills, heightened anxiety-like behavior and reduced memory, which could be partly reversed by EPO. Starting into the final year 🎓 100 days ago I moved to California to continue my PhD studies at Stanford University - I am very excited about the many more days lying ahead! New research focus 🧠 I am advancing my recent work in Neuroscience, focused on examining anxiety through EEG and heart rate data, into the broader field of emotion regulation. What is the neurobiology of anxiety? 🧬 To thoroughly investigate this question, I am exploring the following aspects: 1. How do brain and heart interact in threatening contexts?  2. How do highly anxious individuals regulate their emotions?  3. If easily accessible in our daily lives, what important insights can brain and heart rate data bring us? I’m excited to address these questions during my time at Stanford - especially looking forward to interdisciplinary exchange with research colleagues, founders, HealthTech and VC 🚀 Drop me a note if you are in the area!

Hey there all brain plasticity nerds.... Recent, promising, peer reviewed research from The Netherland Institute of Neuroscience, documents the importance of Thalamus function in brain plasticity. The study seems to overall support the continued legitimacy of the practice of sensory integration therapy by occupational therapists over the past decades. The terapeutic focus on Thalamus and Formatio Reticularis function therefore seems greatly warranted, not only when it comes to manifest sensory integration dysfunction, but also when it comes to overall efforts towards the work with neurological plasticity in general neurorehabilitation and -habilitation...Yay! #neuroscience #facialrecognition Interesting study findings reveal that adults' faces evolve to match their names, driven by social expectations. Children, however, do not exhibit the same name-based similarities. This study utilized human participants and #MachineLearning to verify its results. The research indicated that adults sharing the same name had more similar facial representations than those with different names. Conversely, this similarity was not observed among children. Researchers suggest that facial features align with societal stereotypes associated with names over time, creating a self-fulfilling prophecy. What do you think? #leadership

🔬 Breaking Through in Neuroscience: Unveiling the Reality of Zoom Fatigue Recent groundbreaking research has neurophysiologically confirmed what many have experienced in the wake of increased virtual interactions post-COVID-19: Zoom fatigue is real! 🧠 The study, published in Scientific Reports, utilized EEG and ECG data to compare the effects of video conferences and face-to-face interactions. Results showed that 50-minute video conferences led to significantly greater fatigue than in-person sessions of the same duration. 📊 This marks a pivotal step in understanding the neurophysiological impacts of our increasingly digital world, particularly the effects of prolonged video-based communication. René Riedl and Gernot Müller-Putz, leading the study, emphasize the importance of this understanding for individual well-being, interpersonal relationships, and organizational communication. 🔍 The researchers propose that a holistic view of the psychological and physiological mechanisms involved is essential to develop strategies to mitigate the harmful effects of videoconference fatigue. #science
