When we were engaged to rebrand the karate dojo - Karate Academy of Power, we set out to craft a brand that respects their Okinawan roots whilst avoiding tired cliches from the 80s. Philosophy based martial arts are also making a comeback as people move away from testosterone aggressive sports. As always we focus on how branding and marketing will contribute to the overall success and sustainability of the business. In a competitive market, a strong brand sets a karate dojo apart and can make it more appealing to individuals seeking martial arts training. We designed a system that is able to adapt to changes in training methodologies, teaching techniques, and overall industry trends. It communicates that the dojo is not stuck in the past but is responsive to contemporary needs. The logo is easily translatable to digital platforms, making it effective for online marketing, social media, and website development. By aligning their dojo's new image with current societal values and interests, it can now connect with a broader audience. This can be beneficial for community outreach, events, and partnerships. Ultimately the Karate Academy of Power will become a distinctive brand that sets new standards in a crowded market. Jaspir – The Why Today marks the 4th time I simply forgot to research summer karate classes for my twin boys. So, it will be another conversation at dinner about how once again I got busy and once again I’ll promise to get to it. The development and build is done, took longer than I thought it would. Jaspir the idea emerged during the COVID times of 2020 and here we are now 3 years after I signed my first Statement of Work with a development partner that we have a go-to-market product.   Apps are in app stores, back end is builts and the incredible human aspect that’s the secret sauce behind it all is in place. Lesson the first soon emerged, COVID atrophied contacts and connections. In order to socialize cool new products and services like Jaspir, well one has to be social. We all kind of withdrew with all the fun that was social distancing and for me I never fully got back out there. That’s had an impact, one I am particularly feeling now because I’ll be honest that networking that came so easy in past isn’t as easy as it used to be which now leads to periods of feeling “stuck” for lack of a better descriptor. So that’s today’s tidbit from behind the curtain. And why if you see me out and about in public with a big ole “Hi My Name Is” sticker on my chest I’m trying to up my networking game!

🚀 Unleashing a New Era: Northern Ireland Karate Board's Website Transformation 🚀 As some of my connections may already know, one of my hobbies outside of work is Karate and recently the National Governing Body for Karate in Northern Ireland (NIKB) has gone through significant changes - one of which being a complete revamp of their website. I was excited to be chosen to take on this challenge!! 💪 Building the Website 👩💻 Gathering requirements: the first step was to understand the user needs and the NIKB Board Members' vision - keeping a focus on the highest priority requirements that can be produced within the timeframe 🖥 Updated design using Figma: all pages were then designed based on the requirements and played back to the Board 🌐 Development from scratch using React.js: originally the website was built using static HTML. Converting to React.js allowed for more development freedom and possibility. An iterative approach was taken and each feature was played back to the Board Improvements 👩🎨 Design: comparing the new design to the old one, it gives a more up-to-date and higher quality feel to both the website and Karate in NI. It represents positive change and growth. The layout and colour scheme are uniform across all pages leading to an improved user experience 👩🔬 Code maintainability: as the NIKB grows, I wanted to make sure the website could grow with it, meaning maintainability was at the forefront of development. Using React.js made it easy for all components to be reused across the site 📱 Responsiveness: given the majority of our users would be on mobile, it was important that the NIKB website is responsive, allowing users to access the website across a wide variety of devices 👓 Accessibility: Karate is for everyone therefore I want the website to be accessible to all. Using the WAVE tool helped ensure I was aligned to WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards Challenges ℹ Information gathering: surprisingly one of the most challenging parts was getting the required and accurate information needed for the site. For example, as the site promotes each individual club, I needed to liaise with multiple club owners to get the consistent level of information ⏰ Time period of 2 months: balancing work, university and my own karate training/coaching and being given a time frame of 2 months was very optimistic - despite this, I was able to have the website up in just under 2 months.
