Outstanding USDA effort to responsibly feeding the world must be complemented by U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization office (IEDO) programs supporting the innovative RD&D, cost-effective technological solutions and best practices to successfully transform the U.S. Food and Beverage (F&B) industry by significantly reducing the energy and emissions intensity of a wide spectrum of F&B products and processes.

Today, as we celebrate this versatile crop, I'm excited to share insights from my recent winning research project "Assessing Drought Impacts on Potato Crop Production in Manitoba via Understanding Yield Loss and Resilience Strategies." In response to global climate challenges, my research team is developing new digital agriculture tools to combine robust predictive models with remote sensing data to understand the daily dynamics of potato yields. 🌱 An insightful discussion on NGTs and agriculture at KU Leuven Plant Institute This past Friday, the KU Leuven Plant Institute had the privilege of welcoming MEP Kathleen Van Brempt and Bruno Tobback. Our meeting focused on New Genome Techniques (NGTs) and their critical role in shaping a sustainable future for European agriculture. Our conversation explored the science and history of NGTs, highlighting their potential to enhance agricultural resilience and sustainability. With MEP Van Brempt and Mr. Tobback, we examined important policy considerations such as labeling and traceability, and the impact on organic farming. The dialogue bridged academic research and policy, highlighting the importance of evidence-based approaches to agricultural innovation. The 7th Association of Vertical Farming Summit will be held in Dortmund, Germany, on 26 and 27 September. The program (https://lnkd.in/g6sB8HES) is well thought out and, if all goes well, will have us taking a good hard look at where operational funds should be deployed (surprisingly, with profit in mind), where research funds should be deployed (with the patience and perseverence to see projects through over three to five years) and, most importantly, how to determine who in the industry understands all aspects of their particular niche so that investors can confidently expect a solid return on investment (not just a 'hope' that profits will one day be realized).
