What I learnt speaking at last week's Zenith Global Ltd Vertical Farming Conference: Storytelling: Discussed the power of narrative with BAZ & CO, emphasizing how vertical farming is revolutionising male skincare with potent ingredients like basil. Shout out to Jones Food Company for a plentiful supply. Vertical Farming Benefits: Highlighted its incredible eco-credentials – using 95% less water, zero herbicides/pesticides, and year-round growth. Challenges: Addressed industry hurdles like the energy prices surge due to recent geopolitical issues. New Crop Opportunities: The audience voted cosmetics as the most promising use of crops from vertical farming, followed by saffron, strawberries, and tomatoes. Circular Production: Dr Phillip Lee presented a holistic vision of a circular economy for vertical farming, with optimal locations next to renewable sources. The audience favoured city edges for vertical farms. Global Updates: Engaging insights on space exploration techniques, international developments, and branding/marketing. We are really excited to announce a new project that has been kicked off across Gippsland: ->Regenerative Rotational Cover Crop Trial program (RRCCTP) The aim of this program is to pilot different cover crop varieties, using regenerative and circular economy centred farming practices. The crop varieties will include: 🌲hemp, as seen on the video below 🌻sunflower 🌼canola 🌽maize 🌱bullrush and other water lilies While also developing a business case for farmers to get excited about. The business case will focus on a number of aspects, but the key component is around understanding key operational costs and trying to lower those key operational costs by value adding the farm behind the meter. This can be done in a few ways, and from both an energy crop, fuel crop perspective, we want to give the traditional business model a circular design focus! Iyris offers technologies like SecondSky greenhouse covers and nets, which reduce heat stress on plants, and resilient plant genetics that improve crop resistance to salinity, heat, and drought. [The Environmental Challenges of Agriculture] The FARMŸNG project was born out of this necessity: faced with a growing demand for animal and plant proteins and an expanding global population, we must rethink our way of producing food. By 2050, we need to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 70%, and traditional agriculture is responsible for 19% of these emissions. Did you know that raising mealworms in our vertical farm emits 40 times less CO2 than raising cattle? Moreover, by using mealworm excrement as organic fertilizer, we can reduce the environmental footprint of rapeseed production in France by up to 19%.
