In fact,  reusing deadstock fabrics, let’s say 1 square meter, reduces 82% of the resources that we use compared to demanding a regular supplier to produce a new square meter of fabric with virgin materials. In Recovo we have been 3 years working hard to recover leftover materials from international brands, fabrics, yarns and trimmings to give a sourcing alternative for brands responsible with the planet.

I'm excited to share the Tracing Textile Waste Project! 🎉 Why is this important? At present, a significant bottleneck in progressing towards scaling recycled textiles is the lack of transparency regarding the origins of textile feedstock. Our goal is to develop an open-source data template that streamlines the collection and exchange of textile waste data, from origin to recycler. Improving the visibility of reclaimed material inputs will enable brands to report more effectively on the recycled content used in their products (e.g. textile-to-textile feedstock). This will facilitate compliance with the #ESPR eco-design requirements, the upcoming #DPP, reporting obligations under the #CS3D, and the eco-modulation criteria in the Waste Framework Directive. A key objective of this project is to deliver recommendations to Textile Exchange for the development of new and existing standards, including #GRS and #RCS. Today, we’re thrilled to announce the launch of the Tracing Textile Waste Project, a two-year initiative in partnership led by Fashion for Good and Textile Exchange. This multi-stakeholder effort aims to harmonise data and system capabilities in the reverse supply chain, enhancing transparency and traceability of textile waste. Key Objectives: ✅ Establish an open-source data template and glossary of terms. ✅ Create a standardised framework for collecting and exchanging textile waste data. ✅ Deliver recommendations for the development of new and existing standards, including GRS and RCS. This project is made possible through collaboration between brand partners, including adidas, BESTSELLER, Target, Levi Strauss & Co., and Norrøna, as well as key system stakeholders such as Reverse Resources, Control Union, Recover, and USHA YARNS LIMITED. Our efforts represent a crucial step towards a more transparent and sustainable fashion industry. Re:NewCell's bankruptcy: Another example of fashion not following through on sustainability Renewcell, a pioneer in textile recycling, was forced to file for bankruptcy due to lack of funding. While the fashion industry loves talking about sustainability, this news reflects the harsh reality - actions rarely speak louder than words. The company struggled to secure funding despite extensive efforts, highlighting the systemic challenges innovative sustainable solutions face. This is a major setback for the industry and a huge loss for the environment. Is the fashion industry truly committed to a greener future, or is it all just talk? The story of Renewcell tells me the fashion industry is not ready to put it's money where its mouth is on sustainability. Frankly I am tired of seeing all the possible solutions available to transform the industry when all actions still point towards #overproduction and #overconsumption. What are your thoughts on Renewcell going into administration?

Last week, our managing director Katrin Ley participated in Changing the Fashion Industry session at the DLD Circular 2023 in Munich 👏 In this particular session, Patrik Lundström from our innovator Renewcell, Gudrun Messias from adidas, and David Puyuelo Huguet from COLEO joined as panellists, and it was moderated by Jennifer Schenker from The Innovator. These industry experts discussed how circular innovations can be a driving force in changing the fashion industry. A few insightful points were highlighted in her talk: ✅ To address the impacts in the fashion industry — carbon, waste, water, etc. — business as usual is not enough. Scaling innovation across all steps in the supply chain is key for industry transformation. ✅ Over the last 5 years, the interest in circularity and innovation has grown exponentially. Fashion for Good alone has scouted and screened more than 3000 innovators, supported more than 150, and raised financing of more than 1.5 billion euros. ✅ We need to address key barriers to unlock further scaling of hard-tech innovations, which is mostly related to 3 actors: innovators, industry, and investors. The innovator will receive a US $5 million investment from the Far Eastern Group to support the construction of its commercial-scale facility to scale up textile-to-textile recycling in the apparel industry. “We have a deep conviction in circularity and the commercial viability of cycora® in the highest quality applications in apparel. For circularity to scale, integration across the entire value chain is essential. We are looking forward to working with world-class partners like Far Eastern Group to bring significant product and business expertise to Ambercycle’s cutting-edge manufacturing innovation.” — Shay Sethi, Co-Founder and CEO of Ambercycle Ambercycle converts textile waste into cycora® yarns (regenerated alternative to conventional polyester) for apparel brands and manufacturers. The innovator’s process uses textile waste from landfills, purifies and collects polyester pellets to make cycora® yarn from which new clothes can be made. Ambercycle’s cycora® regenerated polyester, derived from end-of-life textiles, will replace conventional polyester in Athleta’s lineup starting in 2026, making Athleta the pioneering performance apparel brand to adopt cycora® at scale. Chris Blakeslee, CEO of Athleta, emphasized the brand’s commitment to sustainability and quality, stating, “As a B Corp-certified brand, Athleta is dedicated to reducing our environmental impact by incorporating recycled materials like cycora®, aligning with our values and maintaining our high quality standards.” Athleta’s inclusive apparel range, designed by and for women, integrates performance and technical features to support various aspects of women’s lifestyles, from yoga and training to travel and recovery. Shay Sethi, CEO of Ambercycle, expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with performance-oriented brands like Athleta to drive the circular fashion movement, noting the increasing demand for circular materials.
