The summer is a great time to get active and to try out new sports. Perhaps you’ve been inspired by the recent Olympics or are at a holiday resort with sports activities that you can try out. It’s always fun and beneficial to try out new activties– you never know, you might just discover a new hobby. While the weather is warmer and with the long summer evenings, it’s also a great time to get outdoors and explore nature, which will provide you with endless benefits for yoru wellbeing. I recently tried paddle ball for the first time and really enjoyed it, so is something I’m looking to start playing more regularly. Perhaps you’re holidaying in a new area - if so, why not use it as the perfect excuse to get out there and explore. Or perhaps you’re taking a daytrip to the beach and can try out some new water sports or open water swimming. If you have school aged children, why not get them involved too. Drag them off their devices and outdoors to enjoy some active time together. It was fascinating for you to witness how I’m advancing in my work in Germany. Now, I want to share my recent stint over the past two weeks with a tourism and youth recreation organizer during a short-term assignment. I served as a Snowboard Instructor and caretaker for an assigned care group. My daily work routine looked something like this: 7:00 - Morning coffee 7:30 - Waking up my crew 8:00 - Shared breakfast, discussions, plans, expectations for the day based on the weather 9:00 - Heading to the slopes 10:00-16:00 - Slope activities with a lunch break 17:00 - Return to the Hotel (Shoutout to ALBERGO Felice) 17:30 - Dinner 19:00 - Evening sports activities (sports hall, cross-country skiing, ice skating, or board games for participants to choose from daily) 21:00 - Return from evening activities 22:00 - Quiet time. Do you think this is a mega-active daily schedule? Has any guy tried managing over 70 participants in a sports camp for two weeks, ensuring each is content with their sports progress and newly formed social relationships? Certainly not an easy feat – I can liken it to working in a factory, where the chief production manager has to juggle a bunch of workers, equipment, and production pace to fit into the daily production plan. What I achieved, and what I’m really proud of: • Firstly, I made a comeback to teaching snowboarding after three seasons for group S1, who had never dealt with snowboarding equipment before and had to choose boots and set up their equipment for the first time. I Just Do This!!! • Secondly, I instilled a passion for active recreation and the principles of mutual support in the group. • 6 guys from my coaching group fought for their first-ever snowboarding badge, and they got it. • 2 guys won gold medals in giant slalom at the end of the camp in their age groups, which was a mega surprise for me. One participant also received the Crystal Globe for time, result, and overall class. Pride because he competed against much older and more experienced individuals in snowboarding. • And lastly, I felt in the Dolomites like I was in Poland – in the positive sense of the word. If you ever want to send your boys to a mega-attractive sports camp, I highly recommend my employer. Now, I’ll see how the online community works on this platform. I’m back in Poland, and from the end of February, I’m ready to take on new challenges. If you’ve met me and know how important well-done work is to me, please write me a recommendation. Breakfast with an Iron Man 🚴♂️ On Tuesday I met with Bruce Leishman Bruce is the founder of KitUp, a platform to rent outdoor equipment for your next adventure! KitUP helps connect people to equipment hosts and renters. Growing up around a diving school and business, there's no surprise Bruce has taken to the world of outdoor sports. We spoke about: - Cycling in London and cycling in general! The fun of long distances, cool cycle routes and even the UK's most current topic... potholes! - The impact of Netflix and sports-based documentaries on the awareness of outdoor sports to the mass market. - Creating a newsletter mailing list of people in anticipation of launch as well as the importance of following through with the list to understand how to get users from signed up to active. - Building a rental marketplace business and the challenges that come with building the critical mass of supply and demand. How to find acquisition channels that stay away from the 'There's not much on there' or 'There's not enough demand for this'. - Leveraging partnerships and B2B2C play to encourage usage of the platform. We discussed understanding user behaviour to understand how best to improve platform utilisation. Do outdoor users plan in advance, rely on the weather, book an Airbnb first and then equipment? These sort of questions help understand - Building and enabling groups of people to try new activities removes the barrier to entry of outdoor sports which can sometimes feel difficult to start off with. I could totally relate as the sort of person that would turn up to my first triathlon with a mountain bike, no goggles and a pair of old trainers. ----- If you're an investor or founder keen to meet, I'd love to have breakfast with you in London. Thought I’d share something I’ve been thinking about a lot recently: hobbies and growing as a professional. I’ve been in working life for about 10 years now. In the beginning, I didn’t quite see how hobbies fit in a CV. I mean, they’re just hobbies, right? Later on I realized how 10 years of basketball helped shape me into a team player, among many other things. And that was just from a childhood hobby. Last year I bought my second sailboat, a 1986 H Artekno, after about 4 years of sailing and sailracing, and a few races into helming (the one steering the boat). Someone I know said I should start my own female crew to race with because H boats are very common and therefore a great (but also very competitive) class to race in. ”Me? A female team?” Was my first reaction. I was just learning the sport myself. Still am. Well, it wasn’t too long before I had started asking around for women to join my team, and by the end of season 2023, I was astonished that I had managed to gather not only the three women I needed but six in addition to myself and the goal had evolved from sailracing to racing in about 30 races between May and September, including the national H boat ranking series, Finnish Championships and trying out for the H boat World Championships. And turns out, as far as I know, we’re the only female H boat sailracing team in the world. Next thing I know I find myself setting up a registered association with a mission of advocating for the mental health of the young, planning sailing events for the summer to introduce young people into a sport that really takes your mind off of everything, being the chairwoman of that association, creating marketing materials and making calls to gather sponsors to fund our mission, and being the leader of a team women on a journey towards challenging the best H boat teams in Finland and maybe even around the world. Taking advantage of the skills I’ve learned in school and at work, and getting even better at them. I’ve always been one for big goals. This one’s massive. Honestly, I’m not sure if we can actually make it into the Worlds in less than one year, but we’re giving it our best shot for sure and learning everything we can about our boat, sailracing and most importantly, working as a team. This week we started a full-on renovation on the boat, and will learn how to sand and paint the hull to make the boat sail faster. In addition to being in what feels like a full-time leadership school right now, sailing and especially sailracing has taught me so much about teamwork, patience (in low winds and teaching others how to sail), perseverance (in hard weather conditions), and humbleness (under the forces of nature, in a sport you can never master 100%). Not to even mention how much sailing solo has taught me. How have your hobbies helped you develop?

"Please learn Skiing, Surfing, Golf and Tennis or start Running marathons to grow your career," said my boss 20 years ago. Do you feel socially awkward when you are with people who are into sports, serious reading, or any special hobby? It's reported that a whopping 90% of Fortune 500 CEOs play golf, and 80% of executives say it enables them to establish new business relationships. Have you stood ignorantly between two senior golfing colleagues or clients when they started conversing about handicaps or 18 holes? 🙋🏻♂️ or When one of your colleagues spots a Garmin-wearing executive in a networking event, they start talking about how many kilometres they ran, swam, or cycled. -However, Miami University and the University of Cincinnati's study found that CEOs who play golf are less likely to have women on their executive teams. The study points out that 77% of golfers in the US are men. -CEOs who regularly play golf are paid 17 % more on average than those who do not. -A few years ago, 13 of the Fortune 500 CEOs were avid Golfers -Another report found that more than 70% of Fortune 1000 CEOs say they've done business with a person they met on a golf course. A 2020 EY study titled 'Where Will You Find Your Next Leader' A study of senior women executives shows that 74% of respondents said a sports background can help accelerate a woman's career, and 61% believe sporting involvement has contributed to their own career success. -The survey linked women in senior management positions to experience with sport, finding that 94% of women in the C-suite played sport, 52% at a university level. Even an HBR study of 56 CEOs of the S&P 500 infers that "A true non-work passion will mean a continuous drive to improve yourself, to reach new levels of mastery." However, an earlier HBR study of S&P 1500 companies over 4 years found that the average return on assets (ROA) was over 100 basis points lower for the CEOs in this sample, who were in the top 25% of most frequent golfers. 😅 Some say It's difficult to separate sports from the corporate world and the best icebreaker. Like today, the topic will be WPL and RCB, and why not?🤩 👏 We have even made hobbies a famous Job Interview question, so much so that we get turned off nowadays when people respond by, "I love watching OTT in my free time" 🤫 When Hobby becomes the badge of honour, will there be consequences?

“Let my people go surfing!” - Yvon Chouinard - a guiding principle for life 😎 Adventure, people and learning have all been a massive part of my life. This photo taken by myself in Tofino on Vancouver Island, is of my son Joseph Dickson on our family reunion road trip in Canada last year. It’s one of my favourite photos as it captures so much about what is important to me. If it could have all three of my children on it, then it would be even better, but like life, in reality, they have all chosen different waves to surf 🏄 in different parts of the beach and that in itself gives me great joy. My working life has been dedicated to people. Their development, growth and wellbeing within an organisational context. My career has been about “liberating human potential” amidst the everyday challenges we face as human beings in a planet full of learning experiences, some that we choose and some that choose us. I’m a firm believer that life is a gift and that if we make good choices, it can be a rich and rewarding experience. Even the most blessed of us will have bumps in the road there will be bright lights and dark shadows and for some, life is much tougher as the cards they have been dealt lead to a life full of unwanted challenges. Regardless of our individual situations, there is one choice we can all make for ourselves, every single day, and that is the attitude and mindset we choose to bring to each moment of life. We choose our attitude, we choose how we show up for others, we choose how we approach the next breaking wave. Our work at Impact is all about liberating human potential, about learning every single day. About how we show up as leaders, as colleagues and as human beings. I once sat next to Yvon Chouinard of Patagonia at one of our conferences it was a brief but inspiring moment for me. His attitude to people and planet 🌍 for me is encapsulated in the title of his book “Let my people go surfing”. What he has done through his leadership for how to run a responsible business for the good of people and planet inspires me everyday. My challenge to us all is to ask yourself “What attitude will I be choosing today?
