I agree with focusing on the work and doing what you are passionate about. I also am a big proponent of continuous learning. I personally learn by reading first and then doing tasks hands on repeatedly to understand what I’m doing. Knowing the process and “the why” helps. I will confess that I am not comfortable with totally relying on Google and YouTube for learning. It’s good for learning something quickly, but I feel that a more formal “hands on” training is more lasting. Certifications are a big factor in IT, perhaps just as, or more important than a degree. I’m sure people will differ with my opinion here. Certifications show that an individual has taken the time to learn the subject matter and cared enough to check their knowledge via a certification exam. Teachers in our educational system have to be certified to teach, why not other fields?

Good Advice And is communing a BIG BUT "what you saying is the idealized version of work, and the reality can be much harsher." I'm deeply concerned about the vast investments being poured into AI to advance machine intelligence, seemingly without financial constraints. In contrast, investments in human intelligence (HI) appear inadequate. I'm example, my career path has been diverse: starting with FFMpeg and transitioning to SQL (utilizing resources like Google and YouTube for learning), then learning Power BI for reporting (again, relying on Google and YouTube), followed by using Azure Data Factory (ADF) and now Python. (again focus on Google and YouTube) This varied experience has prevented me from specializing in any single area, making it challenging to secure employment without formal certifications. and people fear of being replaced due to evolving job requirements. During interviews, even minor mistakes or deviations from expected answers can lead to rejection. It often feeling I'm just the one use resources like Google or platforms such as Stack Overflow for assistance of my problems. The focus appears to be more on meeting immediate company needs rather than fostering personal and professional growth. 😢

Absolutely right! Doing what you love and doing things right is indeed the best way to advance in your career. I'm currently embracing this principle as I undergo a career reorientation, aligning my work with my passions. Even if it means taking a few steps back, I'm confident that this path will lead to performing at my best and achieving long-term success. Let's keep pushing forward with purpose and passion!

Accenture
