Over the last few weeks, I have been inundated with questions from applicants about the impact of the recent SCOTUS decision on affirmative action. 🏛️⚖️ The questions all basically revolve around whether or not the decision hurts or helps their prospects of admission. Certainly, there has been a lot said and written since the Court’s decision, but I think that while certain things will change, much will stay the same. In the wake of the decision, Columbia implemented a requirement that applicants submit a 90-second video. When this made some waves in the media (understandably, given its timing), it was quickly withdrawn and largely written off as an error (which seems unlikely). In contrast with Columbia, Harvard has taken a far more nuanced approach in response to the Court’s decision and has decided to do away with personal statements entirely. You read that correctly - you will no longer submit a personal statement as part of your Harvard Law application. Instead, you will submit two separate essays, a ‘Statement of Purpose’ and a ‘Statement of Perspective.’ According to Harvard, the Purpose essay seeks to understand your motivations for seeking a J.D. and your goals/vision for the future. In contrast, the Perspective essays asks applicants to ‘share how your experiences, background, and/or interests have shaped you and will shape your engagement in the HLS community and the legal profession.’ This is, I think, a net win for applicants. Firstly, it allows applicants more of an opportunity to help the Committee get to know them. Secondly, it still very much allows applicants to convey ALL the relevant information while also allowing HLS to curate the kind of diversity that law schools prize. HOWEVER, while your essays have always mattered… THEY ARE NOW MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER!! It also means that applicants will need to spend more time planning and composing their applications. The University of Arizona was the first law school to accept the GRE as an alternative to the LSAT… but nobody cared too much until Harvard did it. So… with that precedent in mind, don’t be surprised when you see many more schools adjusting their application essays this year and next! #1l #lsac #lsat #gre #law #lawschool #lawschooladmissions #admissions #prelaw #aba #futurelawyers #tomorrowslawyers #legaleducation #lawstudents #college #careers #legal #barexam #lawyers #work #genz #lawtwitter #legal #lawyers #youngprofessional #boomer #professional #career #job #intern #prelawpro #lawyersoflinkedin #scotus #affirmativeaction #admissions #gre #harvard #harvardlaw #personalsstatements

🎓 Exciting New Chapter Unfolding! On January 11, 2024, I had the privilege of walking across the stage, donning a cap and gown to officially mark the culmination of an incredible journey - my graduation ceremony. Completing my Master’s degree with Distinction in a foreign land has been nothing short of surreal. The journey that started with studies concluding in August and results received by October has now been beautifully punctuated by the ceremony, making it all feel undeniably real. Today, as I reflect on this milestone, I can't help but feel an overwhelming sense of pride. As I stand at this crossroads, I eagerly anticipate the next phase of my journey – gaining industry experience in the field of law. The classroom has provided a solid foundation, and now I'm eager to apply that knowledge in real-world scenarios. Here's to embracing new beginnings, continuous learning, and the exciting opportunities that lie ahead! I am grateful for the lessons learned, friendships forged, and the unwavering support received throughout this academic odyssey. As I step into the professional realm, I look forward to connecting with like-minded individuals, exploring collaborations, and contributing to the field of law. If you have any insights, opportunities, or just want to connect, feel free to reach out. Deep breaths. Here it is. My dissertation, published. https://lnkd.in/gAsNX2Xq I'm immensely proud of the time and effort that was put in to make this a reality. We don't often talk about how demanding higher education can be, particularly for those who are also working full time jobs, who are parents, and who have a host of other responsibilities to keep the lights on, a roof over the heads of our family, and food on the table. This isn't a degree to check a box. This is a commitment. This is a choice. This takes work. To those who helped make this possible, I can't thank you enough. To those who are considering higher education: believe in yourselves, believe in what you can do, and believe what the work can do for others. To those who want better spaces for law enforcement professionals, I hope you are able to find time to read this. And, I hope it takes us in a positive direction. The profession, and the people, deserves it. #lawenforcement #wellness #police #mentalhealth #leadership #leadershipdevelopment #research #researchstudy #researchforchange
