A major milestone in the carbon markets!! With the United States government starting to articulate integrity guidelines for voluntary carbon markets, the industry will become much more trust worthy and robust. The Biden administration announced the release of the “Voluntary Carbon Markets Joint Policy Statement and Principles”, aiming to enhance and advance the market for carbon credits by establishing the US government’s guidelines to ensuring the high integrity of voluntary carbon markets (VCMs). https://lnkd.in/gKCdaMZt).

Absent a carbon tax, the voluntary carbon markets (VCMs) are our best tool to ensure that companies pay for their CO2 emissions, and that these funds flow to organizations innovating to hasten the green transition. Thanks to The White House for publishing its Principles for Responsible Participation in Voluntary Carbon Markets (VCMs). This is a major signal in support of the VCM, urging companies to use high-quality carbon credits to account for their hard-to-abate emissions. We're particularly grateful for Principle 3 : "Corporate buyers that use credits should prioritize measurable emissions reductions within their own value chains." This Principle gives companies a mandate to reduce their Scope 3 wherever possible, and then *inset*, paying forward their future decarbonization by investing in carbon credits that support the transition of hard-to-abate sectors that currently benefit their business, like #cement, #concrete, and #steel. Yesterday, a Joint Policy Statement and Principles for responsible participation in voluntary carbon markets was issued by the Biden Administration (Treasury, Ag., Energy and others). The Joint Statement contains seven non-exhaustive principles intended as a step toward building high-integrity voluntary carbon markets. Read more about the principles in this post. #esg #VCOs #VCMs Marc Rotter

In a key milestone for the voluntary carbon market, The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) has announced it has approved the first set of methodologies that meet its high-integrity Core Carbon Principles (CCPs). These seven CCP-Approved methodologies account for 1.5% of the carbon credit market and focus on capturing methane from landfill sites, destroying ozone-depleting foams and refrigerant gases from equipment. This will lead to approximately 27 million CCP-labelled credits eligible for trading in the market, with additional methodologies under review to enable the sale of a further 76 million units under the CCP framework. It’s fantastic to see this development in the CCPs to make it easier for buyers to identify high-integrity credits, building confidence in the #VCM. The Biden administration released the "Voluntary Carbon Markets Joint Policy Statement and Principles" this week.
