We know disabled people want to be more active. That’s why in our #manifesto we’re calling on the next government to make meaningful change. Our three asks: 1. Protect the benefits. Provide clearer understanding and wider safeguarding to reassure disabled people that being regularly active will not threaten their social security and other forms of government financial assistance. 2. Equip health and care workers. With NHS, ensure that better processes are in place for health and care workers to support disabled people to use physical activity in ways which work best for them. 3. Increase accessible outdoor spaces. Take a leading role in promoting and legislating design standards that ensure accessibility in local and national spaces. Disabled people deserve the right to move, play sport or be physically active however they choose to be. Nobody must feel excluded or forgotten as we strive for a happier, healthier, more active nation. https://lnkd.in/e_4snVNw

There are 16 million disabled people in the UK. Yet, disabled people face many barriers that can make it more challenging to access and take part in meaningful sport and physical activity. It is not fair that disabled people continue to miss out on the physical, social, and health and wellbeing benefits of being active. We all deserve the right to move, play sport or be physically active however we choose to be. Nobody must feel excluded or forgotten as we strive for a happier, healthier, more active nation. Our manifesto outlines our top asks for the next government and policy makers across the country: https://lnkd.in/e_4snVNw

Shockingly, only 9% of disabled people agree they have the opportunity to become a coach or take on a role delivering sport or activity. This needs to change. Making disabled people feel welcome in all areas, and challenging negative attitudes will motivate more disabled people to take part in sports and physical activities and transition into volunteer roles and/or the workforce. It's that simple! Our #ActivityAllianceSurvey is the primary source of insight for organisations working to achieve fairness for disabled people in sport and activity. Please use our insight to inform your practice and together we can change this statistic. Get the headlines, or read the full survey report here: https://lnkd.in/exPuAMV5

Disabled people up and down the country will watch the Autumn Statement tomorrow, anxious to see what new stress will be inflicted on them. We’ve seen the same cycle play out over and over again. The government announce a plan to get disabled people into work, then they immediately jump to punitive measures, and give vague assurances that support measures will come. Tomorrow needs clarity. Disabled people need to know that they will be given meaningful work, or support to find a role that is tailored to their skills and abilities. They need to harbour aspiration and support disabled people to work in industries where they can challenge the status quo and drive innovation. One such industry where disabled people are needed is in our screen sector. In TV alone, we need 13,500 *more* workers to be representative of the UK's D/deaf, Disabled and Neurodivergent population. Our sector is predominently self-employed and the Back to Work plan has no sign of support for self-employed workers. For myself and so many of my disabled colleagues, Universal Credit has proven to be a lifeline as we see turbulence in the production sector due to US strikes and the Cost of Living Crisis. Reforms are needed in Access to Work, Mental Health Support, and, of course, bringing down the NHS waiting lists. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that any of this will come to pass. Disabled people want to work, but the government need to admit that their actions are stopping millions from doing so.
This Wednesday will see Chancellor Jeremy Hunt's Autumn Statement. The lives, health and security of Disabled people should be an absolute top priority! Our Policy & Campaigns Officer Dan White sets out what is needed here in his comment piece. https://lnkd.in/d92bFXyN #AutumnStatement #AutumnStatement2023 #Chancellor

The Whaikaha Review report identified some real issues. The government’s response demonstrated their view of disabled people - that is: a problem to be shut down. The Review singled out flexible funding as problematic. Why? Because people used it!! The government, in a classic response from people with no real vision and a 20th century managerial approach, pushed pause on such nonsense. Clearly disabled people and their whānau/ family need to be told what they need. They are not competent to design it for themselves. Now that the funding is with MSD, the disconnect between policy and funding will slowly but inevitably push disabled people and their whānau/ family into poorly conceived, one-size-fits-all service responses that will limit their citizen rights and place them in danger of abuse and neglect. Better financial control could have been achieved by Whaikaha retaining the funding but using the MSD system instead of the appallingly antiquated Health system.
