Hey, my friend, let me tell you this crazy story that happened during the chaotic COVID pandemic. So, there I was, right in the middle of all the madness, feeling like the world was losing its mind. But in the midst of it all, I had this epiphany. I realized that what we really needed, what we were craving, was genuine human connection. And that's when it hit me—I decided to start something epic. Picture this: it's 2021, and I gathered a bunch of guys, totally unrelated, and we formed what we called the Kingsmen Men's Group. At first, we were just four clueless dudes, not knowing what the heck this group would turn into. Our only aim was to hang out and get to know each other better. Simple, right? But holy smokes, things took off from there! Week after week, our little crew grew into a tight-knit support network. We became like family, man. Our meetups became a lifeline—we were there for each other through thick and thin, like the ultimate accountability partners. And guess what? We didn't stop there. No way! We levelled up big time. We became masters of setting kickass goals and achieving them at lightning speed. Procrastination? Bye-bye. Timidness? See ya later. Anxiety? We showed it who's boss. We were on fire! But you know what made our group truly special? We learned how to truly embrace our dark sides and turn them into resources! Yeah, the parts that society usually judges and discriminates against. In our little sanctuary, we threw all those societal norms out the window. We welcomed every single part of ourselves—the good, the bad, and the downright ugly. And you know what? It was liberating, man. Our meetups became these intense, soul-touching sessions. We weren't just having casual chitchat—we were creating a safe space where everyone felt seen and heard. We laughed, we cried, and we faced life's challenges head-on, together. People caught wind of our epic journey, and they wanted in. They felt the connection, the magic. I guess my storytelling skills had something to do with it too, hehe... The Kingsmen Men's Group became a symbol of hope, a testament to the power of human connection. Happy New Year! 🎉 A few years back I quit doing resolutions and instead focused on changing one misguided and "safe" belief I had about my world. The kind of narrative I could tell myself when something went wrong. Why it wasn't my fault. This year I'm going to stop saying that I'm not good at business. If you know me well then at some point you've heard me say "but hey, I'm just a theater major what do I know?" -or- "but my first business crashed and burned so don't listen to me." While I only say it out loud occasionally and even think it sounds humble, the reality is that a story plays in my head all the time that says "I don't belong here and I don't deserve this." Imposter Syndrome, sure. But it goes deeper. I'm programming my brain to accept something that's simply not true just to protect myself. Going forward when I hear my inner critic say "you are clueless and everything you've accomplished Is all luck and circumstances." Instead, I'm going to look at the facts. I started as an intern at my first job and 14 years later got asked to become the President of the company. I launched my first company, nGen Works, in 2003 and had global clients by 2006. While I didn't understand how to price services or basic business principles I had really good instincts and a strong team that I listened too. I personally was great at creating awareness. In the end I sunset my shop not because I sucked but because I found a new passion, building community. I took over the Bureau of Digital in 2016 and over the last eight years it has grown into the most vibrant and supportive community I could imagine. A team of three puts on over 100 events with a LOT of support from the community. I have constantly told myself that I had nothing to do with the Bureau's success. It was started by two very talented folks and supported by so many more. I took over a successful business and then the pandemic changed the way the world was and the community grew at a ridiculous pace. While all of this is true, I had to make some tough decisions and they definitely paid off. I am really good at building a community. Posting this is weird because we aren't supposed to brag or take credit. And I have had smart people around me guiding me the whole time. But if we don't stop telling ourselves these false stories about how we aren't enough how will we ever be able to see what heights we can truly reach. So I'll go first... My name is Carl and I'm damned good at business! Who's next?

When you realize that biz dev is mostly having coffee, lunch, drinks and other fun meetups with interesting people... It starts to become a lot less scary. You aren't pitching yourself - you're having coffee with a friend (old or new). You aren't networking - you're making a few new friends at happy hour. You aren't selling yourself - you're figuring out if you can help someone. I think this is in part why younger folks in biz dev struggle to find their footing in the early days. Because you don't know that many people - and you assume that people won't want to hang out with you, or hear what you have to say. Meanwhile... now that I'm 40 and mostly WFH and spending time with my kids... I absolutely LOVE when people ask me to get together IRL, for any reason! This is why when I travel, I throw a happy hour (in collaboration with Eric Brown and/or our clients, partners or friends). For one, it's a great way to see 20-40+ people you miss or want to get to know better, all at once. And even if people can't make it - simply by inviting them - you are back on their radar. And you might find new ways to help or support each other. Reminder: people, for the most part, want to hear from you! Not with a spammy pitch... but with a genuine invitation to connect (virtual or IRL). Invite + listen without any agenda. Offer to spend time with people because you are curious + want to help.
